ITESO To Restore Barragan House

The Jesuit University ITESO is the new owner of a Guadalajara house -- one of the earliest designs by famed Mexican architect Luis Barragan -
- which it plans to restore and make into a cultural center or video
sala.
Located in Guadalajara's Chapultepec neighborhood, the two-story house
built in 1928 was one of 11 homes considered by the university, which
evaluated potential use, visibility and cost.
"The University needed something in the city center, nearer to the
public that cannot go all the way out to ITESO (located on the western
Periferico)," said Carlos Petersen, coordinator of ITESO's cultural
outreach program.
After a four-stage remodeling project Casa Clavijero is scheduled to
open July 31, coinciding with ITESO's anniversary.
Born in Guadalajara, Barragan (1902-1988) is considered Mexico's
modern architectural master, distinguished by an almost mystical use
of space. In the 1950s and 1960s he designed some of Mexico City's
most outstanding residential areas, including Predregal de San Angel.
In 1980 Barragan was awarded the 100,000-dollar Pritzker Prize the
world's most prestigious architecture prize, established by Jay
Prizker, founder of the Hyatt hotel chain.
