Huichol mural goes subterranean

A superb tribute to Huichol artist Jose Benitez, who died last month at the age of 70, can be viewed inside the Juarez Tren Ligero (subway) station at Guadalajara’s Parque Revolucion (Federalismo and Juarez). altHis giant artwork called “la semilla del mundo” (the seed of the world) is reckoned to be the largest piece ever created by a Huichol artist.

Benitez showed his work extensively in the United States over three decades and was widely regarded as the leading artist ever to emerge from the indigenous community that spans the states of Jalisco, Nayarit and Zacatecas.
President Vicente Fox presented Benitez  with the National Arts and Science Prize in 2003.
