Cervantes directs, produces, composes, arranges and also plays the trumpet. He attended the University of Guadalajara and Boston’s Berklee College of Music. Now he has settled in Guadalajara, where he is an active presence in the city’s jazz scene. He says that although jazz culture in Guadalajara and Mexico in general has sometimes lacked continuity, “right now it is very mature.” Musically, he says, “Guadalajara has always had the characteristic of being a seminal city.” Cervantes’ work has taken in the mariachi genre.
In its upcoming presentation, the orchestra will play material from the famed George Gershwin musical “Porgy and Bess,” which Miles Davis and Gil Evans adapted for jazz.
The show will also feature Berklee professor and invited trumpet soloist Christine Fawson, “Summertime” is the piece most recognized from this work and its score has been recorded and reinterpreted by innumerable musicians,” he says.
In June, the Gilberto Cervantes Jazz Orchestra played Davis/Evans material at the Teatro Degollado. Now they continue the series.
Cervantes says he has received a great deal of aid and logistical support from the University of Guadalajara, which is a sponsor of their upcoming concert. He has also given instruction at the ITESO university and elsewhere.
