Art museum rejig gathers pace

The Guggenheim adventure may be over for Guadalajara but an alternative modern art museum is rising from the ashes of that aborted project.

Non-profit Guadalajara Capital Cultural – the promoters of the doomed Guggenheim – are forging ahead with a replacement museum in conjunction with the Jalisco government for one-tenth of the cost of the New York franchise.

The substitute museum comes  with a cheaper price tag but its goals are equally as lofty.

According to Capital Cultural, around 30 million dollars will see a modern art museum built on the edge of the Huentitan Canyon that will attract 300,000 visitors a year, create 1,670 jobs and generate 17 million dollars annually.

Already earmarked to design the museum is the award-winning architectural firm of Herzog & De Meuron, responsible for London’s Tate Modern, San Francisco’s Young Museum and the Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany.

Somewhat optimistically, Capital Cultural hopes to start work on the museum before the end of the year. However, the state budget has yet to be approved by Congress and government funds will be needed to get the museum started.  Another matter is the 900 hectares of land donated for the Guggenheim project by Guadalajara city hall in 2007.  While Mayor Juan Pablo de la Torre believes there will be no problem in simply transferring the legal title of the donation over to the new project, opposition councilors are asking for a full review of the new project before they give their approval.

Capital Cultural says it hopes to complete the museum in time for the Pan American Games in October 2011.
