Spanish opera at Teatro Degollado

The highlight of the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra’s winter season looks to be its two performances of “Luisa Fernanda,” one of the finest 20th-century zarzuelas.

Enormously popular, “Luisa Fernanda” premiered at the Teatro Calderon in Madrid, Spain on March 26, 1932, a year after the declaration of the Republic.

This romantic zarzuela in three acts was composed by Federico Moreno, with the libretto by Federico Romero and Guillermo Fernandez Shaw.

A zarzuela is a Spanish lyric-dramatic genre that alternates between spoken and sung scenes, the latter incorporating operatic and popular song, as well as dance. The name derives from a royal hunting lodge, the Palacio de la Zarzuela near Madrid, where this type of entertainment was first presented to the court.

In “Luisa Fernanda,” the characters move easily between elegant comedy of manners and revolutionary politics; between the sophistication of Madrid and the simplicity of the Spanish countryside; between romantic high spirits and near-tragic melancholy.

The part of Luisa Fernanda will be played by Patricia Hernandez and Javier Moreno will interpret the role of Dante Alcala. Ernesto Alvarez is the scenic director.

Next week’s production will be sponsored by the Universidad de Guadalajara and feature the Jalisco State Choir, directed by Sergio Hernandez, as well as the JPO conducted by Hector Guzman.

Teatro Degollado, Friday, November 27, 8:30 p.m. and Sunday, November 29, 12:30 p.m. 240-450 pesos.
