Canadian singer makes her Guadalajara bow

Nelly Furtado, the 31-year-old singer-songwriter who soared to fame in 2000 with her peculiarly named hit “I’m Like a Bird” performs in Guadalajara on Saturday, March 13.  Furtado, a Canadian with Portuguese parents, has sold some 20 million albums worldwide and had number-one hits in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and numerous European countries.

Thanks to her beginnings in a Portuguese marching band, Furtado plays the trombone, ukulele, guitar and keyboard. She has worked with the likes of Kylie Minogue, Justin Timberlake and Juanes, and comes fresh from performing with Bryan Adams at the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver.

With her Portuguese origins and her Cuban husband, Furtado incorporates these Latin influences in her music – performing some songs in Portuguese and recently releasing an album in Spanish, in which she sings a duet with Mexican star Alejando Fernandez.  Having her own record label, a daughter called Nevis and even a “Nelly Furtado Day” (March 21) in her home city of Victoria, Vancouver, Furtado has definitely made an impact. A self-professed “Promiscuous Girl,” Furtado will be rocking the Auditorio Telemex in Zapopan next Saturday at 8:30  p.m. Tickets 300 to 1,600 pesos.
