Over the years it’s been called a “Benjamin,” a “Benjie,” a “Frank,” a “C-note,” a “Big-face,” a “Large” and a “Charlie.” Unknowingly, Polish artist Magdalena Firlag pays homage to another of the 100-dollar bill’s monikers – the “Big One” – with a huge 5.20 x 2.20 meter bill made out of broken glass.
There are probably many ways to interpret the novel artwork but the artist says it’s a metaphor for how capital works. All the glass was taken from old thrown-out bottles.
“I wanted to express the recycling process, to give it use and transform it into art,” says the 26-year-old.
The intriguing display will be on view until August 5 but an appointment to see it is required. The gallery is Sector Reforma Arte Contemporaneo, Guadalupe Victoria 398, Analco. Guadalajara. To arrange a private viewing call (33) 3618-8810.
