Harpists unite for all-day jam

The Fifth Harp Encounter at the Gonzalez Gallo Cultural Center (old train station) in Chapala on Friday, March 19 will draw masters of the folk harp that was introduced to Mexico during the colonial period. Along with the harp, other traditional instruments, such as the salterio (a dulcimer-like instrument), will be demonstrated.

Among the featured performers is U.S. harpist William Faulkner – the mastermind behind the event, along with Chapala’s own Javier Raygoza and Los Centenarios, Mexico’s only known harp duet.

The list of guest artists includes Gaudencio Martinez, Jesus Guzman, Luis Ku and Francisco Gomez. Classical harpist Santiago Di Morales will join in, along with Daniel Torres, who will play the psaltery. A traditional all-string mariachi troupe, El Carrizo, will also perform.

The event begins at 2 p.m. with solo performances by the maestros. The action intensifies during the afternoon, as the artists group and regroup, “jamming” on into the evening hours.

The event is open to the public and free of charge. The Cultural Center is located at Avenida Gonzalez Gallo 1500 in Chapala.
