Ajijic Cultural Center plans week-long arts festival

Having recently completed a renovation and name change, the Ajijic Cultural Center is celebrating its fifth birthday with a calendar of events sure to gratify every taste. The series runs from Sunday, August 22 to Sunday, August 29 on the Center’s esplanade and upstairs rooms on the north side of Ajijic’s principal plaza.

The festivities open on Sunday, August 22, 7:30 p.m., with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and the opening of a collective exposition of work by local artists. The evening will be topped off with a concert by the Medeles String Quartet at 8:30 p.m.

On Monday, August 23, patrons can enjoy a film showing hosted by Lara Galindo at 7 p.m. and a concert by Los Hijos de la Macarrona from Monterrey at 8:30 p.m.

“People’s Night” on Tuesday, August 24 starts at 8:30 p.m. with the release of locally made and designed hot-air balloons and the introduction of the candidates for Queen of the Fiestas Patrias Bicentenario of Ajijic. On hand for the festivities will be the Banda de Chavo from Chapala.

On Wednesday, August 25, 8:30 p.m., the Theater Company of the City of Chapala presents a play (in Spanish) under the direction of Aldo Raygoza.

Thursday, August 26, 8:30 p.m. sees a presentation by the Ballet Folklorico of the City of Chapala under the direction of Zaida Zamudio.

On Friday, August 27, 6 p.m. you can dance to recorded music played by DJs DJane Seren and Mario Martinez of Ajijic. A concert of SKA with Charales-K of Chapala begins at 8:30 p.m.

A cultural tianguis fills the plaza from 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 28. Story-telling by Pepe Veloz of Guadalajara begins at 11 a.m, followed at 1 p.m. with a concert by “Colectivo Moyolo” of Ajijic. Mario Z. Puglisi of San Juan Cosala reads poetry at 7 p.m. The evening will be topped off to the beat of Zona Cuba from Ajijic.

The cultural tianguis returns on Sunday, with a puppet show by El Tlakauache at 10 a.m., along with storytelling. Arpa de Chapala plays charming harp music at 1 p.m. At 3:30 p.m., you can bid for artworks in an auction under the hammer of Efren Gonzalez. Closing ceremonies will be at 8:30 p.m., when students from the University of Guadalajara School of Music present a “Big Band Concert.”

All events are free and open to the public.
