Music lovers are in for a treat along with a musical history lesson when soprano Dolores Moreno, accompanied by a chamber orchestra under the baton of Maestro Vladimir Gomez, takes the stage of Auditorio de la Ribera del Lago in La Floresta on Tuesday, September 14 at 7:30 p.m.
The program will be made of up Mexico music composed through the decades, ranging from the elaborately gilded Spanish Colonial period to the beloved waltzes of more contemporary times.
Moreno, a native of Guadalajara, has studied music and voice in Guadalajara and Mexico City and has received numerous higher degrees. She studied operatic singing with two principal voices of the New York Metropolitan Opera and, with scholarship assistance from VIVA la Musica, attended a special workshop for operatic professionals held in Saltillo, Mexico in 2005.
She has sung in the most important music venues of Guadalajara and throughout Mexico, and has performed as a soloist with the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra (JPO). She has also recorded CDs, including “Musica de la Catedral de Guadalajara,” Vol. II and “La Voz en la Musica de Domingo Lobato.” She currently directs the Polyphonic Chorus of the University of the Valley of Atemajac.
The conductor of the program, Vladimir Gomez, has an impressive background that includes studies in Barcelona, Spain, and at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City. He has sung as a soloist in many operas and oratories throughout Europe and North and South America and has composed music for orchestra, theater and the moves. He has recorded 13 CD albums.
Gomez is the founder and director of the Cultural Center Tlatoani, an association dedicated to spreading the culture and music of Mexico, especially to the underprivileged, with instruction to more than 3,000 students. He has actively promoted the international festival of Musica Virreinal Mexicana and in 2009 sang with the Opera Universitaria de Jalisco.
The concert on September 14 will be unique in that much of the music to be presented and interpreted by these virtuosos has been long ignored, gathering dust and hiding its glory in cathedral closets. It is truly fitting that it should be presented during Mexico’s celebration of 200 years of Independence.
Tickets are on sale at the Lake Chapala Society (LCS) Tickets, Etc. booth, Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to noon.
