Ribera Arts Review - February 20, 2010

Jewish film

The Lake Chapala Jewish Congregation is presenting a Jewish Mini Film Festival over three Sundays, starting 3 p.m. on each day. The films have a Jewish theme or content that will be interesting and maybe a little provocative. The first film, to be shown on Sunday, February 21, is “The Lemon Tree,” a positive and personal Israeli film that offers an understated and thought-provoking vision of the West Bank troubles. The second film, on Sunday, March 14, is “The Outside Chance of Maximilian Glick,” the story of a young Jewish adolescent from Manitoba, Canada in the ‘50s, with an overbearing family. The final film, on Sunday, March 21, is “El Brindis,” about a young female photographer who hardly knows her Chilean father, but decides to travel to Chile to meet him and finds love and sadness.

A three-film pass costs 100 pesos, or an individual ticket is 40 pesos at the door. Congregation member tickets are free. Popcorn and beverages will be available. The Congregation Center is located at Sta. Margarita 113 in Riberas del Pilar. Call 766-5441 for more information.

Instruments

Ajijic Rotarians gathered for a private ceremony on February 11 as two musical instruments were handed over to the Golden Strings program. Lakeside residents Loren and Wendy Hamblin, originally from Regina, Canada, donated an alto saxophone and a clarinet in memory of their two daughters. The instruments had not been used for more than 18 years and were still in perfect condition.

Golden Strings now has 40 students and former students playing professionally. The goal is to hold three concerts a year. As Golden Strings grows, more instruments are needed.

For more information about Golden Strings, contact Marvin Harthcock at (376) 763-5093. Donations of musical instruments (or cash for the purchase of them) will be greatly appreciated.

Fashions

Cece Girling, the force behind the Red Cross Fashion show coming up on March 19, has arranged for ten up and coming young Mexican designers to show their work during the cocktail hour before lunch. It’ll be lots of fun because besides a panel of judges to decide on the best of the new designs, the audience will get to vote too.

Tickets for the Fashion Show are on sale now at the Lake Chapala Society Tickets, Etc. booth.

CASA

The Culinary Arts Society of Ajijic honored its top culinary winners of the past year at its annual February banquet. Three members were recognized and given the group’s highest award – the BING. Winners were Joe DeLeon, Karen Rowell and Monica Malloy, who garnered the award for winning three first places for their dishes during competitions last year. Other awards were given for second and third places and People’s Choice winners.

Each month, members may participate by presenting their best dishes in two categories where they are judged and rated as to taste and presentation. All who would like to join and learn more about good food are encouraged to call Patrick Winn at 766-4842.
