Ribera Arts Review - February 27, 2010

Judged show

The Ajijic Society of the Arts opens its 27th Annual Judged Show on Tuesday, March 2, 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Ajijic Cultural Center on the Ajijic Plaza. See the creative endeavors of more than 70 participating artists in painting, pastels, photography, fabric art, sculpture, collage, jewelry and more. The show will be up for viewing from March 3 to March 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

There will be no regular meeting of the Ajijic Society of the Arts in March because members will be depositing their work for the show at the Cultural Center on Monday, March 1, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Participation in the show is open to members of ASA only.

Gypsies

A spectacular show featuring Hungarian virtuoso violinist Gyula Horvath is set for Thursday, March 19, 7:30 p.m. at Auditorio de la Ribera del Lago in La Floresta.

Horvath has been a professional performer since he was 16 years old and has held forth in such prestigious venues as the Sydney Opera House and Milan’s La Scala. Prominent personages such as Pope John Paul II, Harrison Ford, Helmut Kohl and Yehudi Menuhin are reportedly avid fans.

His concert here at Lakeside will see him accompanied by his band “Sentimento” and folk dancers.

Tickets are 300 pesos each and available at Tony’s Plus-Restaurant Bar, Salvador ’s Restaurant, Charter Club Tours at Plaza Montana and the auditorium.

Auction

Efren Gonzalez will hold an art auction on Friday, March 5, beginning at 3 p.m. on the Ajijic Plaza to benefit the Saul Rodiles School in Ajijic. Many local artists have donated work to be auctioned. At least 35 percent of the proceeds are earmarked for urgent projects at the school. Among the artists participating are Cathy Chalvignac, Elsa Malka, Elizabeth Skelsey, Victor Romero, Antonio Lopez Vega, Libby Townsend and Yvette Chaussee Clevish. Look for snacks and drinks, too.

Exhibition

She’s back! Artist Julie Elizabeth Mignard will open an exhibition of her paintings – “Color Tunes, Visual Songs of a Playful Spirit” – Friday, March 12, from 3 p.m. at the Efren Gonzalez Art Center at Marcos Castellanos 7 in Ajijic.

Season close out

Galeria Los Amigos will hold an art show and season close-out at their space at Javier Mina 35 in Ajijic on Saturday, March 13, from noon to 4 p.m. Among the participating artists are Victor Romero, Isela Martinez, Esther Henning, Arch McKinley, Bonnie Sifferling, Judy Eager, and others. Show up and enjoy the cocktails and snacks and most of all some terrific art.

Theater

The Lakeside Little Theatre (LLT) holds its annual general meeting on Wednesday, March 17. Registration gets underway at 10 a.m. and the meeting starts 11 a.m. at the theater complex. Up for election this year are the president, secretary and treasurer. The slate of candidates presented by the nominating committee and approved by LLT’s board of directors is: Pat Carroll for president, Russell Mack and Kevin O’Byrne for treasurer and Larry King and Keith Scott for secretary.

Nominations are accepted from the floor with the written approval of the person nominated. Members may request numbered proxy vote forms (limit of two per member) from Pat Carroll at mexicopat@gmail.com or 766-3144. Nominees for the position of president must have served on the board of directors for one year or more.

Also on the agenda are the president’s annual report and the comments from other board members about their respective departments.

Ticket Renewal

The LLT Season Ticket Renewal event will be held on Thursday, March 18, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the LLT lobby. Season tickets are still 800 pesos for reserved seats for six plays and include LLT membership. Tickets to individual plays will remain at 150 pesos per person.

Applause

Lakeside Little Theatre’s annual “Applause” party is set for Friday, April 17, 7 p.m. at the theater. The party is free for all those who have volunteered at the theater in any capacity during the season. Look for more details later.

Lysitrata

The Naked Stage presents this Greek classic comedy by Aristophanes on March 12, 13 and 14. The original was first performed in 411 B.C. and has all the hallmarks of a great play. It’s funny, feminist, political and very up to date. It’s also lewd and not suitable for children.

The reading is being directed by Sally Jo Bartlett. The cast includes Maria Mack, Victoria Brooks, Chris L’Ecluse, Amaranta Santos, Phyllis Silverman, Peggy Lord Chilton, Jeff Marsh, John Foster, Roger Larson and David Seligson.

New

Lois Cugini is opening her Opus Boutique (and Gallery) at Morxelos 15 (corner of 16 de Septiembre) in Ajijic for a three-in-one exhibit on Friday, March 5, 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Featured artists will be well-known photographer Jill Flyer, up and coming oil painter Victor Alcazar and jewelry designer Suzy Wright with her Capula Collection.

Of course, there will also be time and opportunity to browse Cugini’s fashion collection, just right for Lakeside living, and to enjoy the wine bar. Opus Boutique is open regularly Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The telephone number is (376) 766-1790.
