Ribera Arts Review - March 6, 2010

Dancers

The award-winning Ballet Folklorico Ixtlahuacan de los Membrillos will grace the stage of Auditorio de Riberas del Lago in La Floresta on Sunday, March 7 at noon. The folk dance group is well-known for its lavish and authentic costuming, as well as “rescuing” authentic but endangered dances from all over Mexico. The group will be backed up with live music from Mariachi Aguila de Chapala and Grupo Lirio.

The group’s participation in a national dance congress in Puerto Vallarta a few months ago (they were chosen by the state to represent Jalisco) led to invitations to perform in Chiapas, Oaxaca and Merida. Though their room and board will be paid for during their tour of Mexico’s south, members of the group are raising money to pay for transportation.

The spectacle will be well worth the 100-peso ticket price (they can be purchased at the auditorium or at SuperLake Market).

By the way, Ballet Folklorico Ixtlahuacan played to a “standing room only” crowd on its last presentation here and many patrons are excited about seeing them again. And we’re told that this program will not be exactly the same as the last. Don’t miss it!

The Judged show

The 27th Annual Ajijic Society of the Arts Judged Show yielded art in a wide variety of styles and media, with nearly 80 artists participating and about 140 works shown in oils, watercolors, pastels, photography, sculpture, and other disciplines.

The “Best of Show” award went to Linzy Roberts for her watercolor painting. In the Acrylics division, first place went to Marian Decker, second to Victor Alcazar and third to Maryanne Linhart, Marcia Lavendar and Gwynne Lott. In the Pastel category Johan Dirkes took the first and third places and Jeanne Tulloch the second.

Ken Caldwell and Marianne O’Halloran took the first place in Mixed Media, Linda Herrin placed second and Libby Shipman and Varn shared the third slot. The Oil Painting category was won by Patricia Ouellette-Watson, Liz Skelsey was second and Mimi Gula and Anita Lee shared third. Susan Bzoza took first place in Photography, Jay Koppelman second and Mags Petela and Jim Stork shared third place.

Lauri Jenson took first place for Sculpture, Carol Wood second place and Jan Sterbright the third. In the Student category Bev Denton placed first, Lois Schroff second and Ella Fournier third.

Kitt Vincent was first in the Textile division, Sue Morris second and Deb Fry and Sue Morris were third.

Congratulations to all of the volunteers and the participants who made the show such a success.

The Ajijic Society of the Arts meets the first Monday of each month, 10 a.m. at Hotel La Nueva Posada.

The Lakes

Environmental activists Amigos del Lago invites the community to the opening of a photographic exhibit on Friday, March 12, 7 p.m. at Chapala City Hall (Presidencia Municipal). The exhibit features photographs taken around the world of lakes that are part of the International Living Lakes network. The display will be up for a month and then go on a three-year tour to other communities around Lake Chapala. For more information contact Amigos del Lago at info@amigosdelago.org.

Spring time

It’s time for the Los Cantantes del Lago Spring Concerts, scheduled on March 20 and March 21 at Auditorio de la Ribera del Lago. The singers will interpret a wonderful mix of movie themes and operas, some of them well-known and some surprises. The audience will be wowed by pieces by Aaron Copland, as well as classics from “Lohengrin,” “the Pirates of Penzance” and “The Mission.”

For more information, contact Judith Chambers at (376) 766-2439.

Like an Egyptian

Dimitar Krustev, a local artist, writer and member of the Explorers’ Club, will present the first of a five-part illustrated lecture series, “Art through the Ages,” Thursday, March 11 in the Neill James Sala at the Lake Chapala Society. The series will continue every other Thursday throughout April.

Spanglish Imposition

Lakeside’s improv comedy favorites, The Spanglish Imposition, will be storming the stage once again. This time it’s for three consecutive “Wacky Wednesdays,” March 17, 24 and 31 at the acoustically thrilling Pocket Theater at Centro Sol y Luna, Rio Bravo 10 in Ajijic. As always, the Imposition will have some brand new sketches, song parodies and improv games for your laughing pleasure. There will be some old favorites, too.

Take a large item with you and the troupe will try to use it on stage as a prop. Since their opening performance falls on Saint Patrick’s Day, you can bet there’ll be some other surprises.

Seating is very limited so get your tickets now. They cost 150 pesos and are available from cast members as well as at Sol y Luna and Diane Pearl Colecciones. Get there early and enjoy Sol y Luna’s bar.

From above

Photographer Rebecca Ford opens an exhibition of her work on Friday, March 12, 3 p.m. at Galeria Fotosintesis at the Efren Gonzalez Art Center, Marcos Castellanos 7 in Ajijic.

The exhibition “Views from Above” consists of images taken in many countries, including Australia, Zambia, Mexico, Morocco and the United States. Ford searches for vistas from tall buildings, helicopters, planes, balconies, hot-air balloons or just from above the subject. Sounds like fun!

Get naked

The Naked Stage Group that produces minimalist play readings for the public is issuing an open call for readers, directors and such. Show up at Zaragoza 3A in Ajijic on March 19, 3-5 p.m. and give it your best. For more information call (376) 766 2044 or email thenakedstagegroup@gmail.com.
