Ribera Arts Review - March 13, 2010

Water, water

Amigos del Lago and Chapala city hall are inviting everyone in the community to a World Water Day celebration to be held on the east end of the Chapala malecon, in front of the “Jesus the Fisherman” statue, on Thursday March 18.

The event is due to start around 6:30 p.m., when 40 members of the Mexica (pronounced may-she-ka) group will present pre-Hispanic dances. This dance troupe has included five generations from a single family and won awards around the world. Their feature headpieces are of museum quality.

The dance director is Dr. Elizabeth Torres, an anthropologist, linguist and psychoanalyst from the University of Guadalajara (UdeG).

Join the Mexican community in this ceremony to honor Lake Chapala. Wear white!

Exhibition

An exhibition of paintings by Hermi Vasari opens with a reception on Saturday, March 20, 4-6 p.m. at the Ajijic Cultural Center. The works for this show will consist of two sets (series) – one called “Explosion,” the other “Global Crisis.” All are done in an abstract style with strong contrasts of brilliant color. The exhibition will remain up until the end of March.

St. Pat’s

Bill Vincent is back on the cartel at La Bodega Restaurant, Calle 16 de Septiembre 124 in Ajijic. He and his wife, Kitt, have been invited to do a show there for St. Patrick’s Day. They’ll be performing a mix of Irish songs and playing CDs of Irish and other Celtic music. The show starts March 17, 7:30 p.m.

Contact La Bodega at (376) 766-1002 for reservations. The first beer or the first margarita is free. There is a 100-peso minimum.

It’s about wine

Harvey Bliss will teach two classes all about “The Wonderful World of Wine.” One is on Monday, March 29 and the other on Wednesday, March 31. Both start at 11 a.m.

The first covers terroir, wine-making techniques, old world wines, wine tasting and food matches. The second covers new world wines, vintages, storing, tasting, wine tastings and food matches.

The classes will be held at Restaurant Number Four at a cost of 1,500 pesos per person. The fee includes both classes, wines and food. The classes are limited to 50, so you’ll want to get moving on this. Registration only by paying fee in advance at offices of Purely Canadian International, Libramiento N. 105B (north of Flor Exotica). Reservations will not be accepted at the restaurant by telephone or on the day of the classes. Sign up must be for both classes.

Questions? Contact Maru Salcedo at (376) 766-0699.

El Gallo

It’ll be the last show of the “season” when the El Gallo Gallery opens for “Art Attack” – with a broad spectrum of work and lots of great bargains – on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, March 12. 13 and 14. El Gallo Gallery is located at Guadalupe Victoria 30 in Ajijic.

Whoops!

Due to circumstances beyond her control, Jayme Littlejohn of My, My, How Nice! Productions has been forced to cancel the performances of “Murder at Howard Johnson’s” scheduled for later in the month.

Littlejohn is working on a substitute event and will be announcing details soon.

Gypsies

A spectacular show featuring Hungarian virtuoso violinist Gyula Horvath is set for Thursday, March 18, 7:30 p.m. at Auditorio de la Ribera del Lago in La Floresta. Horvath has been a professional performer since the age of 16 and has held forth in such prestigious venues as the Sydney Opera House and Milan’s La Scala, as well as in the United States, China, England and Switzerland. Prominent personages, including the late Pope John Paul II, Harrison Ford, Helmut Kohl and Yehudi Menuhin, have been avid fans.

Horvath’s concert at Lakeside will see him accompanied by his band Sentimento and folk dancers.

Tickets are 300 pesos each and available at Tony’s Plus-Restaurant Bar, Salvador’s Restaurant, Charter Club Tours at Plaza Montana and the auditorium.

Another opening

Galeria Hacienda La Estacion at Calle Mezcala 86, Colonia Las Redes in Chapala (one block from the old train station) will present an exhibition of art by Francisco Gonzalez, Saturday, March 20, 4-8 p.m. The exhibition will feature the latest and best of Gonzalez’s work.
