Choir
VIVA la Musica! presents the Jalisco State Choir in concert Thursday, July 15, 7:30 p.m. at Auditorio de la Ribera del Lago in La Floresta. The choir, founded in 1981, is directed by Sergio Hernandez and will perform a program of fine Mexican music from the grand to the romantic.
Tickets cost 250 pesos for VIVA members and 300 pesos for non-members. They are on sale now at the Lake Chapala Society (LCS) Tickets, Etc. booth Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to noon.
Contemporary
Local artist Antonio Lopez Vega is holding classes in contemporary painting on Mondays and Wednesdays, 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Ajijic Cultural Center, located on Ajijic’s principal plaza. The instruction will include the use of mixed media, acrylic, oil paint, chapopote and new experimental materials on paper or canvas. The cost is 350 pesos for the month. Students are responsible for their own materials.

El Gallo
Ken Gosh will be adding Tuesdays to his teaching schedule for July., The classes run from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The charge of 200 pesos per classes covers the cost of all materials that are supplied by Gosh. He’s coming up with new techniques in water media and his classes are always lively and interesting. The classes are held at Gosh’s El Gallo Gallery at Guadalupe Victoria 30 in Ajijic. Gosh also has one space left in his Wednesday class and the collage group that meets on Fridays has a few spaces available.
Naked Stage
Visiting director Barbara Clippinger (formerly of Ajijic) has put together her cast for the upcoming Naked Stage reading of “The Dixie Swim Club” by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten. The women include Doreen Chaloner, Jeritza McCarter, Liz White, Betty Lloyd Robinson and Linda Fossi.
Performances are slated for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 16, 17 and 18, 4 p.m., in the Pocket Theatre at the Sol y Luna Center, Rio Bravo 10A on the west end of Ajijic.
Clippinger moved to the Lakeside area in 1996. A former professional dancer and choreographer in New York, Chicago, Las Vegas and around Europe, she immediately became active in the Lakeside Little Theatre (LLT) where she directed and/or choreographed 13 shows. She was the president of LLT and on the board of directors for seven years.
She now resides in Palm Springs, California and this will be her debut as a director for The Naked Stage.
“The Dixie Swim Club,” a zinger-filled but sensitive comedy should be right up her alley.

Summer studio
Students of the Lakeside Little Theatre Summer Studio, facilitated by Graham Miller, will show all they have learned in performances open to the public. Performance dates are Thursday, July 8 through Saturday, July 10 at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday, July 11 at 3 p.m.
The presentation will feature scenes from “Our Town” by Thornton Wilder, “The Glass Menagerie” by Tennessee Williams, “Goober’s Decent” by John Pielmeier, “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck, “Barefoot in the Park” by Neil Simon, “Intermezzo” by Norm Foster, “The Rainmaker” by N. Richard Nash, “Pick-Up Artist” by John Pielmeier and “Vas Difference,” also by Pielmeier.
The presentation is recommended for adults only and is not suitable for children. The show will run about one hour and there will be no intermission.
Open-seating tickets are 80 pesos each and are available at Ajijic Real Estate, Morelos 4 in Ajijic. Please have correct change.
This summer, LLT is offering something special for their audiences. The audience is invited to mingle with the cast and crew of the workshop production after each performance.
Dance
The Ballet Folklorico de Ixtlahuacan will present a program on Sunday, July 18, 6 p.m. at Auditorio de la Ribera del Lago in La Floresta. This very special performance is the premier showing of the concerts they will give while on their cultural exchange tour later in the summer to Oaxaca, Chiapas, Yucatan and Veracruz. They will use live music. This dance group is well known for their rescue of old, nearly extinct dances, and this time they have done their research in the Jalisco towns of Ayutla, Acatic and Atemajac de Brisuela.
Tickets are 120 pesos (if purchased in advance) and on sale at the auditorium and SuperLake market as well as from the dancers (out in full regalia) at the Wednesday tianguis.
Xill

Train station
Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo (old train station) in Chapala has set up a series of classes to inspire people artistically beginning on July 12 and running through August 12. There are classes in painting and drawing for kids, art appreciation classes covering music, theater, dance, painting, writing and all sorts of hands-on projects, including papier mache.
There are courses of bonsai available and lessons of singing and violin, as well.
