Summer art
Some members of the Ajijic Society of the Arts (ASA) will be out on their own for a show and sale on Sunday, July 13, beginning at noon in the garden of Hotel La Nueva Posada. (ASA is not officially exhibiting for the summer months.)
Among those showing will be Barbara Passarello, Lauri Jensen, Ken Gosh, Mario Robles, David Lawrence, Deborah Fry, Gwynne Lott and Antonio Lopez Vega. Come out and enjoy a great meal at La Nueva Posada and have a look at the beautiful creations by these talented people.
The choir
The Jalisco State Choir, directed by Sergio Hernandez, will present a concert staged under the auspices of Lakeside’s VIVA la Musica! organization on Thursday, July 15, 7:30 p.m. at Auditorio de la Ribera del Lago.
The program of beautiful and much beloved Mexican music (in honor of the bicentennial of Mexican Independence and the centennial of the Mexican Revolution) will be a real crowd pleaser. The 40-voice choir will present such favorites as “If My Voice Would Die on Earth” by Blas Galindo, “Mexican Rhapsody” by Tapia Coleman, “The Little Bell” by Lorenzo Barcelata and the fantastic “Huapango” by Jose Pablo Moncazo, among many others.
The Jalisco State Choir has remained an important and integral part of the Mexican cultural scene since it formed in 1981. Their mission, to promote the most important choral music of all time, is now in the hands of Hernandez, who is also a well-known pianist. The choir has sung with such musical icons as Placido Domingo and Ramon Vargas. It participates in many festivals in Mexico and was part of the world premiers (at Guadalajara’s Teatro Degollado) of the operas “Frida” and “Alice in Wonderland.”
Tickets are on sale every day, 10 a.m. to noon at the Lake Chapala Society Tickets, Etc. booth until the day of performance and will also be sold at the door, 250 pesos for VIVA members and 300 pesos for non-members.
Cultural routes
A new series of guide books called “Cultural Routes of Jalisco” is now available at the Gonzalez Gallo Cultural Center in Chapala. The books contain cultural and tourist information. The books, published by the Jalisco Secretary of Culture, are illustrated with color photos and maps and have interesting notes on various places of interest in the Jalisco area. Though published in Spanish, the books are also handy for English speakers.
Individual booklet titles are “Archaeological Cultural Routes,” “Pilgrimage Routes,” “Chapala Lakeshore” and “The Franciscan Route.” These and other cultural publications are available in the bookstore located in the Gonzalez Gallo Cultural Center in the old train station at Avenida Gonzalez Gallo 1500 in Chapala.
CASA
Mary Ann Waite was an early CASA BING winner this year, celebrating with her First Place dish, Mustard Roasted Beef and Vegetables and Horseradish Sauce, at the June meeting of the Culinary Arts Society of Ajijic (CASA). To win a BING, a CASA member must win first place three times within a year.
The theme for the meeting was French food, in two categories: French Main Dish or French Dessert. Taking second place in the Main Dish category was Cheryl Davis for her Shortribs of Beef Bourguignon with lentils and third place went to Monica Molloy for her Stuffed Sea Bass in Puff Pastry. Karen Rowell won the People’s Choice Award for her Cuisses de Volaille aux Cerises, Olives Verts Sauce Porto.
The French desserts wowed the judges, who awarded Lydia Cortez First Place for the Delice Aux Mangues et aux Bananes. Phil Posner took the second place with his Crepes Cerese with Cherry Rum and the Third Place went to first-time presenter Nancy Webb for the Expresso Glazed Profiteroles. The People’s Choice Award for Desserts went to Christine L’Ecluse for her Strawberry Croquembouche.
Hugues Coude du Foresto, a French citizen who now lives with his family in Ajijic, shared his knowledge of French wines and their histories, along with his interesting background. “Hugo” was a consultant for the Pernod Ricard Group before starting his own wine and liquor distribution company.
All those who would like to join in learning about, preparing and enjoying good food are encouraged to call CASA President Patrick Winn at 766-4842. He can also be reached by email at particiowinn@hotmail.com. He would be delighted to invite anyone interested to come as his guest to the next monthly meeting.
