Ribera Arts Review - July 17, 2010

Naked Stage

Visiting director Barbara Clippinger (formerly of Ajijic, now residing in Palm Springs) has put together her cast for the upcoming Naked Stage reading of “The Dixie Swim Club” by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten. The women include Doreen Chaloner, Jeritza McCarter, Liz White, Betty Lloyd Robinson and Linda Fossi.

Performances are slated for Saturday and Sunday, July 17 and 18, 4 p.m., in the Pocket Theatre at the Sol y Luna Center, Rio Bravo 10A on the west end of Ajijic.

“The Dixie Swim Club” – a zinger-filled comedy – will be a lot of fun and sensitive at the same time.

The Naked Stage will present “Night, Mother” on August 13, 14 and 15. Jertiza McCarter directs this work that is definitely not a comedy but high drama with a bang-up ending.

Betty Lloyd Robinson will be in the director’s chair for the reading of “As Bees in Honey Drown,” a satirical comedy by Douglas Carter Beane, on September 17, 18 and 19.

Tickets for performances are 70 pesos. Call (376) 766-2044 or email thenakedstagegroup@gmail.com.

Auction

Local artist Efren Gonzalez will hold an auction of his desirable works, those of several local artists and creations done by participants in his children’s art program. The date is Friday, July 23, 3:30 p.m. on Ajijic’s central plaza.

Proceeds from the auction will go toward supplies for Gonzalez’s free art program for local kids, who flock to his studio nearly every day. Besides the opportunity to bid on some of Ajijic’s finest artwork, bidders can enjoy hors d’oeuvres and shots of tequila. Gonzalez isn’t worried about the weather. He tells us that he has spoken with Tlaloc and the rain god has promised to hold back the torrents until after the event.

Writers

Those with a literary bent should consider joining up with the Ajijic Writers Group. Anywhere from 30 to 78 writers gather on the first and third Fridays of each month at La Nueva Posada, Donato Guerra 9 in Ajijic, from 10 a.m. to noon. Some are novices and some are very experienced. They write about everything and critiques are positive. Many stay for lunch in La Nueva Posada’s great restaurant after the meeting.

New gallery

Jackie Thompson is opening a new gallery purveying fine accent pieces for home décor – thus its name: “ACCENT!” It’s located at 252 on the Carretera on the west end of Ajijic, in Plaza La Huerta. Several members of the Ajijic Society of the Arts (ASA) will be showing there, along with other local artists. The gallery will also offer classes utilizing the talents of various artists, and the owner.

Opening day is set for Sunday, August 1, with an artists’ party from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

For more details contact Thompson at (cell) 045-331-248-4865 or write to jatvashon@yahoo.com.

Summer studio

Congratulations to all who participated in the Lakeside Little Theatre Summer Workshop. The workshop, facilitated by Graham Miller, made its presentation last weekend at the theater. The ensemble interpreted scenes from “Our Town” by Thornton Wilder, “The Glass Menagerie” by Tennessee Williams, “Goober’s Descent” by John Pielmeier, “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck, “Barefoot in the Park by Neil Simon, “Intermezzo” by Norm Foster, “The Rainmaker” by N. Richard Nash, and “Pick-up Artist” and “Vas Difference” by Pielmeier.

The actors, some neophyte, some experienced and some professional, all turned in creditable performances. They were Russell Mack, Kenee Kay Campo, Chris L’Ecluse, Patteye Simpson, John Foster, Zane Pumiglia, Kathleen Morris, Martin Davis, Harry Walker, Pierre Blackburn, Judy Long, Mike Campo and Kathleen Argabright.

The facilitator’s assistant and stage manager was Ann Swiston. Win McIntosh was in charge of props, Sheila Dwyer operated the lights and Wendy and Lorne Hamblin were in charge of costumes.

We’ll look forward to seeing them all on the LLT stage in the near future in full-fledged productions.

Auditions for “Our Lady of the Tortilla,” by Luis Santeiro, the first in the LLT 2010-1011 line-up, will be held Friday and Saturday, July 30 and 31 at 10 a.m. (sharp). Registration begins at 9:30 a.m.
