CASA

The Culinary Arts Society of Ajijic (CASA) featured fish and seafood and complimentary side dishes at its July meeting. Members have a choice of presentation in one of the two categories at each monthly meeting. The dishes are then judged by professionals, who make decisions based on taste and presentation while other members choose the People’s Choice awards and enjoy speakers specializing in the food genre.

CASA President Patrick Winn introduced the meeting’s speaker, Chef David Abadia, owner of Tabarka Restaurant in Ajijic and in Guadalajara. Originally from Spain, where he learned to cook paella in the traditional manner, Abadia worked in Madrid and Mexico City. He then opened paella restaurants in Melbourne and Tokyo before moving to Guadalajara and opening a restaurant with his own particular fusion of traditional paella and fresh game fish.

While Abadia explained seafood preparation and treated CASA members to his paella, judges Preston Whitford, Terry Keleher and Jim Higgins decided on the winners for July.

Pat Carroll took first place in the Fish and Seafood category with his baked coconut shrimp with orange marmalade sauce. Karen Rowell came in second for her Vermouth Poached Wild Salmon with Basil Chive Mayonnaise and Sally Myers, a first-time competitor, won third place for her Seafood Napolitano.

Susan Hood took the first place in the Complimentary Side Dish category for her Jicama and Peanut Slaw, while Cheryl Davis won second place for her Roasted Garlic Custards with Green Onion Coulis. Long-time CASA member Hazel Tash placed third for her Tropical Potatoes.

People’s Choice Awards went to Karen Rowell and Cheryl Davis.

All who would like to join in learning about, preparing and enjoying good food are encouraged to call Patrick Winn at (376) 766-4842.

Cordero on the tube

A scheduling mix-up last week required local crooner/rocker Dan Cordero to shift his television performance to this week. The spotlight will be on “Inver TV” broadcast on Televisa GDL on Saturday, July 31, 6:30 p.m.

The show can be seen on Telecable Basic Cable Channel 6, on Telecable Digital Channel 104 and on SKY Channel 144. So if you thought you missed it last week, here’s your chance to see one of our local musicians hitting the big time.

Season ticket correction
