Well done
Patrons who attended the recent VIVA la Musica concert featuring pianist Andres Sarre and cellist Issac Ramirez must still be trying to catch their breath after a stunning show.
The duo, who play together with great chemistry, enthusiasm and virtuosity, presented a varied program. They came out of the gate with a highly melodic Beethoven sonata. The focus of the concert turned to lovely and playful contemporary Mexican pieces that tantalized the audience. The piece de resistance that rounded out the evening was the exciting George Gershwin “Prelude No. 2,” often identified as a “jazz lullaby.”
Congrats to VIVA for another evening of great music.
Next
VIVA presents its next concert featuring the Jalisco Philharmonic Ensemble Orchestra with soprano Dolores Moreno on Tuesday, September 14, 7:30 p.m. at Auditorio de la Ribera del Lago in La Floresta. Tickets to see this outstanding chamber orchestra go on sale September 1 at the Lake Chapala Society (LCS) Tickets, Etc. booth from 10 a.m. to noon and will be available at the door the night of the performance.
It’s still a good time to become a VIVA member and receive discounts on all performances, including the opera (fully staged) “Rigoletto” coming up in October. Members also get discounts on all the bus trips offered to Guadalajara to see the New York Metropolitan Opera simulcast performances this coming fall and winter. The discounts are just part of VIVA membership – you’ll become part of the community that supports talented young Mexican musicians in their careers.

CASA
The Culinary Arts Society of Ajijic (CASA) featured poultry dishes and cheesecakes at its August meeting. Members can enter one of two categories at each meeting (they must enter competition four times each year) and then each dish is judged by professionals, who make decisions based on taste and presentation. Members then choose the People’s Choice award.
President Patrick Winn introduced Chef Eric, the meeting speaker, who has been creating wonderful dishes at the new Hole-in-One restaurant and filling up tables at the edge of the rooftop driving range.
Donna Carnall, a former CASA president, placed first in the Poultry category for her Greek April Hens with Curry Couscous. There was an unusual tie for second place with Lee Monaco winning for her Coq au Vin with rosemary, Sally Myers for her High Street Chicken and Helen James winning for the Tagliatelle Chicken with Olives and Sun Dried Tomatoes. Third place went to Michael McLaughlin for his Lemon Herb Big Bird.
The first place in the Cheesecake category went to Diane Pretti for the Caramel Praline Cheesecake. This win also made her a “Bing” winner (occurs when a member wins three first-places in one year). Second place went to Joann Nash for her Oreo Cookie Cheesecake and third place went to Louise Drummond for her Hazelnut Caramel Cheesecake.
All who would like to join and learn about preparing and enjoying good food are encouraged to call Winn at 766-4842. He can also be reached at patriciowinn@hotmail.com.
