The Ajijic Society of the Arts will meet on Monday, September 6, 10 a.m. at Hotel La Nueva Posada, Donato Guerra 9 in Ajijic. The membership will be discussing upcoming shows: the first on the Ajijic plaza on September 19 and an exhibition in the Ajijic Cultural Center, “Mexico Mio,” set to open on Friday, October 29.

Helena Feldstein will give a demonstration, “The Art of Felted Handbags, Before and After.” Visitors and guests are welcome. Coffee is on at 9:30 a.m.

The Ajijic Society of the Arts, formed about 30 years ago, is a collection of local artists of all media who gather to exchange ideas and promote art in the Lakeside area.

Don’t miss

Local painter Efren Gonzalez will be holding the hammer at an art auction of about 30 pieces by local artists on Sunday, August 29, 3:30 p.m. in front of the Ajijic Cultural Center on the Ajijic Principal Plaza. Profits from sales will be split between the Cultural Center and Gonzalez’s free painting classes for local children that he holds six days a week at his village studio. There are going to be some great paintings at some really decent prices. Be there!

Craft fair

The Feria de Artesania de Chapala (Artesans of Chapala Fair) will be held at La Bodega restaurant at 16 de Septiembre 124 on Saturday, September 11, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The event is part of La Bodega’s “Live Mexico” program running throughout September.

The luncheon will feature a “taquiza” (all the tacos you can eat with all your favorite fillings) for 70 pesos a person.

Featured at the fair will be the corn-husk doll makers of San Luis Soyotlan; Mata Ortiz fine pottery from Chihuahua; original handwork by the Tarahumara indigenous people of Copper Canyon; Jose Melendrez and his unique jewelry; weavings by Telares los Reyes (tablecloths to clothing); Juan Ramon Soto with his “footed bowls,” chickens in tennis shoes and his heart and rose pottery; Jose Maria Tirado with sleek whimsical modernistic animal figurines, among others.

Ten percent of all sales will go to help the Tarahumara indigenous people of Copper Canyon. Reservations are a must for lunch. Call 766-1002. There is no charge to attend the fair.

Registration is at 9:30 a.m. Tredway is looking for four women and four men. Don’t let the title fool you. This is not a musical, so singing ability is not required. Performances are set for December 11 through December 19.

Dance exercise

Jaime Barbiery will be teaching a class in Dance Exercise on Wednesdays, 11 a.m. at the Ajijic Cultural Center, beginning on September 8. This cardio dance class incorporates a variety of movement styles to dance those calories away. According to Barbiery, the time will fly and you’ll never be bored in this workout. Everyone just joins in the fun and takes a spot on the dance floor.

The one-hour class is designed for movement, movement and movement, as the students will follow the steps Barbiery is dancing, moving your arms, hips, pelvis, legs and feet to whatever music comes out of the IPod. The class has body-shaping benefits, tones muscles, develops core strength and increases balance.

The cost is 50 pesos per class. Wear comfy clothes, bring water and show up.

Also on display will be many wonderful Mexico-themed paintings created by children who attend the free art class that he holds for them six days a week.

The occasion will also mark the unveiling of two of Gonzalez’s latest murals, executed for the village-wide contest.
