Petty Officer Kelly M. Phillips wrote a New York Times op-ed piece last Saturday usefully criticizing of this country’s institutionally sacrosanct military. It was also, perhaps unintentionally, about how – when in the National Guard and in Mexico – she lost her military sense of what was around her, and missed the fact that the military here often seems to be emulating... well, say, Donald Rumsfeld as he sent troops toward Baghdad in canvas-covered, unarmored Humvees and duce-and-halfs (remember Pvt. Jessica Lynch).
