Twenty-seven presidents since 1911? Many Mexicans don’t recall that many: It was a time of shifting, violent change

Those who most benefit from being surprised by twenty-seven Mexican presidents from 1911 to 2010 are those curious about who those jefes were.

Mexicans remember president Francisco Madero, “father of the Revolution” (1911-13); many know the murderer of Madero, Victoriano Huerta, who instantly became president (1913-14); and Venustiano Carranza (dictator, 1914, president, 1916-20) because many towns bear his name;  Pancho Villa, “political arbiter” (1914-15) is famous as untameable; Alvaro Obregon (1920-24) is known for being assassinated for grasping at a prohibited second term; Plutarco Elias Calles (1924-28) is remembered as a virulent anti-Catholic, for his long brutal rule and clumsily veiled “extensions” that became a national joke; Lazaro Cardenas (1934-40), chosen by Calles because he had been a Revolutionary subordinate, threw Calles and his thugs out  of the country.  Champion of the poor, he is fervently revered.
