A week crowded with provocative news. Widely nominated by many jaliscienses as most doubtful: Jalisco Governor Emilio Gonzalez’s declaration that he didn’t know that drug trafficker Ignacio Coronel had been living for some time in Colinas de San Javier. (“Nacho” Coronel was killed by government forces — including 100 soldiers — July 29 at one of his mansions in the Guadalajara suburb of Zapopan.)
Journalists and Jalisco citizens with good memories have heard the denial song before sung by governors in the 1970s-80s who helped drug bosses find a safe haven in Guadalajara. As columnist Carlos Martinez Gracias wrote the local daily, Cabildo, August 11, “The presence of Nacho in Guadalajara is very old and well known, as are the activities of Ignacio Coronel. Only governor Emilio Gonzalez is sure he didn’t know the capo was operating in his state.” Gonzalez, a member of the pro-business, pro-Church National Action Party (PAN) elected in 2007 also denied that he had said August 4 that organized crime had infiltrated all the “structures” (of the state). Local print media and Radio Metropoli quickly ran previously released proof that he did.
