Mexicans caught in an impossible squeeze

“Why are robberies, kidnappings, scams and narco problems on the increase in Mexico?”

I put that question to some Mexican friends and thus began a conversation that led to some interesting insights into what’s cooking beneath the surface here in Mexico.

“Salaries are obscenely low;” offered one amigo. “How can a teacher live on 9,000 pesos a month (708 dollars) and look forward to a pension of 4,000 pesos (314 dollars) monthly? With these kind of wages people can barely survive, let alone dream of saving up money for the future.”
