Your local phone company, Telmex, was founded in 1947 when private investors bought the Swedish Ericcson’s Mexican telephone company. It was sold to the government in 1972 and run as a monopoly until 1990 when President Carlos Salinas ordered its sale to public investors. During the period Telmex was a monopoly, very little infrastructure improvements were made and it became almost impossible to get a new telephone line for your home.
