That Big Ugly Dish

Last summer, one of the providers of programming for C-band, — programming for those big ugly satellite dishes that are usually 12 to 18 feet in diameter — mislead the public when they announced that as of 2011 that there would be no more programming available for C-band, and recommended that C-band users convert to a small dish system, using them as their satellite dealer. And sadly, as a result, there are fewer people watching English-languge channels on C-band. What they should have written was that they were no longer going to offer big dish programming but that their competition would continue to do so.

It is true that there are fewer programs offered to the public over the Big Ugly Dish (BUD), but programming is still available. I am not recommending that you go out and buy a new BUD system. But I am suggesting that if you have a large dish and a digital 4DTV receiver that you are not using, and if you are not happy with the programming that is available using your other source of TV programming, that you check out the programming available using your big dish system. Maybe you will want to get some programming from both your present system and C-band.

My favorite C-band provider is Skyvision. To see what programming is presently available on the big dish, go to www.skyvision.com, look toward the bottom of the webpage and left click on the link titled C-band programming. You will notice that all of the programming is from one satellite. It is anticipated that within the next month or two there will be more programming available. There are already some FTA (Free to Air) channels that you can watch without subscribing coming from other satellites.

Do any of the programming packages on the above link interest you? If so, you or your satellite dealer will have to reprogram your satellite receiver. As explained on the original link, (www.skyvision.com), there are two options for reprogramming your receiver. Choose the option that allows you to continue to move your satellite dish from one satellite to another which is labeled “Alternate Procedure - X4 (W5) Subscription Programming & FTA.”This procedure will retain all satellites currently in the memory of your 4DTV.

Only you know the type of TV programming that you want. Check out the various satellite program providers and determine what is best for you. In my case I want local programming from the greater Seattle-Vancouver area and C-band doesn’t provide that but the Canadian provider, Shaw Direct does, so I will not be reactivating my C-band system.
