Book presentation
Local author Michael Hogan presents his new book “Savage Capitalism and the Myth of Democracy” in the elementary school library at the American School of Guadalajara on Thursday, December 17, from 7-8 p.m.
Hogan is the author of 16 books, including a highly successful history of the Irish battalion in Mexico, which formed the basis for an MGM move starring Tom Beringer. The former English Department head at the American School, Hogan is the special Latin American consultant to the College Board and to the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Overseas Schools.
Of “Savage Capitalism,” author Noam Chomsky said: “These lucid and thoughtful essays provide a valuable picture of Latin America from a point of view that is perceptive, often controversial, but always instructive.”
See page 9 for a review of “Savage Capitalism.”
The American School is located at Colomos 2100, just off Lopez Mateos, near the Av. Americas intersection in Colonia Providencia. For more information call (33) 3648-0299.
Ken Edwards
The National Ceramics Museum in Tonala is staging a homage to renowned ceramicist Ken Edwards, who moved to Guadalajara in 1959 before developing his now famous reduction-fired celadon stoneware.
Along with Jorge Wilmot, Edwards installed the first stoneware kiln in Tonala and perfected a technique characterized by the combination of three factors: the world famous traditional Tonala hand-painted decoration; ancient Chinese technology and Edwards’ original designs.
This excellent museum houses many fine examples of Mexican pottery, including the bruñido, betus, petatillo, engretado, canelo and bandera styles.
The homage to Edwards will be up until December 23. The museum is located at Constitucion 104, in the center of Tonala. Open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call (33) 3283-4765 or 3683-2519 for more information.
Lucha Libre
Catch all the thumping action from the Second World Lucha Libre (wrestling) Festival on Friday, December 11; Saturday, December 12 and Sunday, December 13 in the Plaza Liberacion, facing the Teatro Degollado, in downtown Guadalajara.
The very best exponents of the “sport,” such as Mistico, Blue Panther, Sexy Star and Dr. Wagner Jr., will be grappling, but that’s not all on offer at the festival.
There will be a massive exhibit of masks for sale, as well as talks by wrestlers on their experiences in the trade and clinics for wannabe luchadores.
The event is a perfect way to get acquainted with this Mexican obsession and the crowd can sometimes be as much fun to watch as the fights themselves.
Bouts will start in the afternoon and tickets are available from stalls set up in the Plaza Liberacion, Plaza de Armas and Plaza Tapatia, as well as via www.ticketmaster.com.mx. Prices range from 80 to 250 pesos.
