Subway dance moves

Guadalajara’s Tren Ligero (subway) continues to lead the city in underground art, this time with spaces dedicated to dance and theater.

Nesly Mombrun, the new director of  art at the Tren Ligero, opened up Estacion de la Danza at the Plaza Universidad terminal last Friday with a performance by Grupo Quebranto. Dance performances at the Plaza Universidad terminal are scheduled each Friday at 7 p.m. They include: Rafael Carlin, February 19; Arjos Danza Contemporanea, February 26; Blass Ballet Clasico, March 5; Escena Tres, March 12 and Ballet Concierto Español, March 19. By September, a 500,000-peso theater space will be opened at the San Juan de Dios station. The cost of the performance is a train token: six pesos.

Milestones

Frank Polizzi, famed ballroom dancer and 40-year member of the American Society (AMSOC), recently celebrated his 93rd birthday at the society’s clubhouse in Colonia Chapalita.

At the same party, Ron Prince from Atlanta asked Tapatia Judy Becker to marry him.  She accepted his proposal along with a heart-shaped ruby and diamond ring.

Brits get-together

The next British (and friends) evening will be on Saturday, February 20 at the home of Susan and Lino Sterlini in Ciudad Granja. Call (33) 3629-3135 or 3627-1015 for directions.

Film Festival

France is the honored guest at this year’s Festival Internacional de Cine, running March 12 through 19.  French actor Vincent Cassel will be at the festival to present the animated film “Lascars.”  Actor Neils Arestrup will present “Un Profeta,” nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Film. Other French films to be shown include: “Bellamy” by Claude Chabrol and starring Gerard Depardieu, and “Chanel Coco & Igor Stravinsky” by Jan Kounen. Mexican film previews will include “De La Infancia” by Carlos Carreras, “Las Buenas Yerbas” by Maria Novaro and “Perpetuum Mobile” by Nicolas Pereda.

State Choir debuts CD

On February 23, Jalisco’s Coro del Estado will present its first solo CD dedicated to the music of Mexico and the Americas at a free concert in the Instituto Cabañas’ Caplla Tolsa, 8 p.m.  Entitled “Flores de Mexico y America,” this is the first solo recording of the group in its 28-year history.

The majority of the 16 cuts on this CD are a capella, allowing listeners the chance to appreciate the talents of the choir’s 41 members under the direction of Sergio Hernandez.  Well-known renditions include: “Atotonilco,” “Cielo Rojo,” “Jarabe Tapatio,” “Adelita,” “Las Alteñitas” and “Besame Mucho.”  The group also performs pieces by Mexican composers such as Consuelo Velazquez and Blas Glindo, and others from Cuba, Argentina and Venezuela.

Anti-rabies

Zapopan hopes to keep its 30-year record of zero cases of rabies intact with a campaign to vaccinate some 14,000 of the city’s 155,000 pets in the next few weeks. The city is also working to reduce the estimated 34,000 homeless cats and dogs from roaming its streets. Sanidad Animal brigades will be cruising many of the cities neighborhoods.
