Orchid exposition
More than 440 beautiful orchids are on display at the Parque Agua Azul (Av. 16 de septiembre and Niños Heroes) until Sunday, March 21 in an exposition called “Aromas de Primavera” put on by Guadalajara City Hall and the Tapatia Orchid Association. The exposition includes over 18 species of orchids, many of them resplendent in their colors.
“We wish to give Tapatios more information about these plants, so they won’t feel inclined to buy on the black market,” says Magdalena Ruiz, the city’s Environment and Ecology chief.
During the exposition, courses and workshops are being offered for those interested in learning to cultivate orchids, whether as a hobby or for business purposes.
There are 25,000 different species of orchids worldwide, of which 1,300 are found in Mexico.
Orchid lovers should not miss this show. The park is open daily until 7 p.m.
Music party
A free music festival is coming to the city this weekend with something for everyone. Thirty groups from a wide range of genres will be playing, including the much hyped Catalan DJ Prefuse 73.
La Fiesta de la Musica is an international event that has taken place in 340 cities worldwide to get people into the party mood and celebrate music in general.
The center of the festival will be along Avenida Chapultepec, which will be closed to traffic from 2 p.m. Saturday until 3 p.m. Sunday.
Expect rock, electronic, classical, hip-hop, Indie, salsa, reggae and even jazz.
The free fun starts at 4 p.m. on Saturday afternoon and goes on until the early morning.
Spring Equinox
Enjoy a chill-out among new-agers (many will be dressed in all-white) on Sunday, March 21, at the Iztepete pyramid – Guadalajara’s sole ancient monument – at the corner of the Periferico and Mariano Otero to celebrate the Spring Equinox.
Easter altars
The Centro Cultural Patio de los Angeles, the Museo Regional and the Museo de las Artes Populares will create their own altares de dolores (altars of sorrows) in observance of the Friday before Holy Week, which is celebrated here as Viernes de Dolores (Friday of Sorrows). The altars are also called incendios de dolores (fires of sorrows) because of the large number of candles they often contain. Other common elements of the altars are a statue or portrait of Mary, dressed in a purple shawl, purple and white tissue paper with cut out designs, oranges and grapefruit, chamomile blossoms and lettuce leaves which symbolize Mary’s broken heart.
The altar at the Centro Cultural Patio de los Angeles (Cuauhtemoc 250, Colonia Analco at Templo de San Sebastian de Analco) will be up from March 24-27 (open Mon.-Fri., 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Sat., 9 a.m. to 3 p.m). The altar at the Museo Regional (Liceo 60, corner of Hidalgo) will be up from March 16- April 4 (open Tue.-Sat., 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sun., 10 a.m. to 3 p.m). And the altar at the Museo de las Artes Populares (San Felipe 211, corner Pino Suarez) will also be up March 26-April 4.
