Lorena & Rafa

Former world number one golfer Lorena Ochoa and Barcelona soccer star Rafael Marquez – arguably this region’s most well-known sports names – hosted an extravagant dinner Wednesday in aid of their charities dedicated to helping impoverished children.

The “Champions Gala” brought together famous faces, including former president Vicente Fox and his wife Martha and NASCAR Mexico driver Antonio Perez. Comedian Andres Bustamente was the master of ceremonies.

Tickets for the fund-raising dinner went for 10,000 pesos per head and all proceeds will be split equally between Ochoa and Marquez’s charitable organizations. Ochoa will use the money for equipment in her secondary school in the Barranca de Huentitan neighborhood of Guadalajara, while Marquez will grant scholarships for the Nutrition, Education and Sports program in his after-school-hours centers.

The pair said they had been working on putting together a joint charity event for some time.

Tapatio night tour

Not been in town long? Got visitors coming in? Instead of suffering by showing them around in the afternoon sun, why not take a night tour of the city?

Tapatio Tours – the red double-decker buses that whizz around the city – also provide night tours taking in the historic center, the Minerva and Plaza del Sol. What’s more, there’s even a free drink and meal thrown into the bargain at La Hacienda del Bosque in Colonia Jardines del Bosque.

Tickets are 200 pesos for adults and 140 for children. Call (33) 3613-0887 for further information or visit www.tapatiotour.com. The tours set off from the Rotonda de los Jaliscienses Ilustres next to the cathedral.

Brits meet

The next British evening will be on Saturday, July 24 at the home of Gail and Sandro Songini.

Bring your own drinks, perhaps a snack and enjoy the company.

Numbers and diversity at the British evenings have been expanding rapidly at recent events.

The house is located in Residencial Colomos Patria and the fun should get going at 8:30 p.m.. For further details call (33) 3641-7331 or (33) 3629-3135.

Open to Brits, friends of Brits or anyone who has a passing interest in all things British. Don’t forget to invite potential newbees.

Charreria

It’s not very high profile or well publicized, but most weekends the challenging and traditional Mexican form of rodeo – charreria – takes place not far from the center of Guadalajara.

The skill needed to participate in the sport is astounding and it adds up to great afternoon’s spectacle.

This Sunday’s event starts at midday at the Lienzo Charro de Jalisco, R. Michel 577, just behind Agua Azul Park. Tickets shouldn’t be more than 50 pesos.

Also, a little advice: If you have no idea of what charreria is, go to www.guadalajarareporter.com and search for the March 27, 2009 story on the sport. You’ll benefit a lot!

See your city!

Free summer walking tours start out from Plaza Guadalajara (in front of the Palacio Municipal) Tuesday to Saturday at 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. There’s an extra evening tour on Saturdays starting at 7 p.m.

The tours take in many of the major historical sites of the city center and last approximately two hours.

If you’ve got little ones under 12, they can go on the “Chiquitines Turisteando,” which is a separate tour that includes fun games as well as a visit to the Fuente de la Inmolacion de Quetzalcoatl and the mirador (lookout) in the San Juan de Dios Jewelry Center.
