Panda pandemonium

Mexico City-born panda Shuan Shuan is going down a storm in Guadalajara. The 23-year-old has been the center of attention at the zoo in the first two weeks of her six-month stay. An average of 1,500 visitors a day have respectfully gawked into her custom-made enclosure. At 30 pesos (for adults, 20 for kids) to see her, the Guadalajara Zoo is quickly recouping the four million pesos it forked out to bring her to the city from the capital.

For more information on the zoo, visit the website at www.zooguadalajara.com.mx.

Soccer season

Although slightly overshadowed by the big opening of the new Chivas stadium (see page 6), the domestic Mexican soccer league starts up again this weekend.

Atlas, the team that play in red-and-black and have only one championship to their name (over 50 years ago), have signed on some new players and are expected to do better than last year.

Estudiantes, owned by the Autonoma University of Guadalajara (UAG), are pretty much the same as always, with a competitive team but unlikely to challenge for major honors. For an evening out, an Estudiantes game in the small Tres de Marzo stadium in Zapopan is perfect. It’s less stressful than going to see the Chivas or Atlas, and pretty much all the seats are close to the field.

Mexico’s biggest team, Guadalajara Chivas, have lost their top  goalscorers in Javier “Chicarito” Hernandez and Omar Bravo. They will attempt to fill the gap with players from the youth setup. It could be an interesting experiment.

Mexican professional soccer games usually have an excellent carnival type atmosphere and are something that should be experienced. They’re not expensive but in Guadalajara nowadays take place in the cooler evening hours.

Opening games in Guadalajara:

Estudiantes v Cruz Azul (Tres de Marzo) Friday, July 23, 8 p.m.

Chivas v Puebla (Estadio Jalisco) Saturday, July 24, 7 p.m.

Estudiantes v Puebla (Tres de Marzo) Friday, August 6, 8 p.m.

Atlas v Necaxa (Estadio Jalisco) Saturday, August 7, 8:45 p.m.

Pet Expo

If you or anyone in your family is partial to pets, of any shape and size, Expo Mascotas Guadalajara is the place to be next weekend. You can come with or without your pet!

Not only will you find a wide – and bizarre – range of pets, there’ll be a whole host of things to do.

Vets will be on hand to give free examinations to your pet. If you want to try your hand at being a vet yourself, an interactive display will guide you through the basics. No animals will be harmed.

Of course, you’ll be able to find every accessory, piece of clothing, snack, grooming kit and a host of other things for your beloved animal.

For those with a little daredevil in them, there will be a poisonous snake exhibition that neither you or your pet should be within anywhere near touching distance of.

Expo Mascotas is on Saturday, July 31 and Sunday, August 1, from 11 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. each day. Children under 1.20 meters in height get in free as do all pets. The adult entrance fee is 70 pesos per person or 240 pesos for a family of four.

Fishing tournament

Zapotlanejo’s third annual fishing tournament takes place at the (Presa) Calderon Dam on Saturday and Sunday, July 24 and 25.  Sign-up is on Friday evening at 9 p.m. The serious fishing runs from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and 7:30 to 1 p.m. on Sunday. Trophies are handed at 2 p.m.  The event is organized by the Club de Amigos de Pesca y Libera de Jalisco. Camping on site is available beginning 3 p.m. Friday.
