The city’s finest parks offer respite & workouts

Guadalajara has dozens of green spaces but these four are among the best.

Bosque Colomos
This cool and leafy park – split into two sections – contains hundreds of eucalyptus trees, an enchanting Japanese garden donated by the people of Koyoto, and paved walking and running tracks.  There are several small lakes, ducks and birds, exercise equipment and horses for rent by the hour.  A garden created by the city of Portland, Oregon is also starting to take shape.  Free activities for children (drawing, crafts, etc.) take place Saturdays and Sundays from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.  A city jewel!
Price: 4.50 pesos, free for under-12s. Hours: Monday-Sunday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Address: Calle Chaco 3200, Colonia Providencia. For horse rental, use entrance on Avenida Patria. Telephone: (33) 3641-3804, website: www.bosquecolomos.org.mx.

Parque Metropolitano
Largest park in the city measuring 113 hectares, with several miles of walking, running and cycling track. Gets full at weekends with picnickers, but there’s room for everyone. Bicycles for hire (tandems too) – you must leave an ID.  Located on the western outskirts of the city.
Price: free of charge. Hours: Monday-Sunday, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Address: Avenida Beethoven 5800, Colonia La Estancia, Zapopan. Telephone: (33) 3673-9489, website: www.parquemetropolitano.com.mx.

Parque Agua Azul
Right in the heart of the city, this traditional and well-kept park boasts a butterfly sanctuary, small aviary, orchid greenhouse and cafe.  There’s a lake, plenty of benches and access to the Jalisco Institute of Handicrafts, which highlights examples of the best crafts the state produces.
Price: adults 5 pesos, children 2.50 pesos. Hours: Monday-Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Address: Avenida 16 de Septiembre and Campesino.

Parque Rehilete Alcalde
A popular park in the center of the city with mechanical games and a small lake with “bicycle” boat hire.
Price: 20 pesos general entrance. Games and boat hire cost extra. Hours: Monday-Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Address: Santa Monica corner of Jesus Garcia, Colonia Alcalde Barranquitas.
