Rotarians step up with flood relief

Thanks to the generous donations of many in the Lakeside community, Ajijic Rotarians were able to deliver four vans and two pickup loads of food, water, blankets, furniture and other essentials to the deluged village of Atotonilquillo on August 18. The Rotary group was able to tour the houses in the village that were devastated by heavy flooding that ran through the village at about 3 a.m. last Wednesday.

Rotarians were cheered that they found a very resilient population busily cleaning up debris and replacing sidewalks and bridges. Water had run completely through the walls and totally destroyed the homes’ contents. A major concern now is about the mold that is already evident inside the houses. The government has supplied large barrels of chlorine bleach to spray on the walls to retard the moldy growth. However, there are not nearly enough spray bottles to go around.

Besides the need for empty spray bottles, the greatest need is for mattresses, cots or any kind of bedding. Most people are sleeping on the floor. An abundance of clothing has been donated; but there is an ongoing need for food items such as rice, beans, pasta, sugar and coffee.

Rotary Club will continue to collect donations at the office of Henri Loridans in Plaza San Juan across the Carretera from the TelMex office in Ajijic, at least though Wednesday, August 25.
To arrange for pick up, especially for large items, call Sandra Loridans at (376) 766-2891 or 766-3232.
