The organization has been helping sick children and their families since 1993 by reimbursing their medical expenses. However, due to the government withdrawing two-thirds of its annual grant, the slowing of private donations and a mismatch between when and how they raise and spend their funds, Niños Incapacitados is in a financial crunch. It has registered no new children in the program since February of this year and has had to cut back on the transportation costs that it has traditionally paid to patients traveling for their medical care.
Board members say they will continue with tried and tested methods of raising funds, such as holding parties, quiz nights and dinner dances, but hope to raise additional funds from the new sponsorship policy.
The immediate goal is to raise 20,000 dollars or about 240,000 pesos. Thanks to some donations already coming in after a meeting was held to discuss the problem last week, the goal seems to be within reach. However, there is still a long way to go. There are currently about 200 children being helped by Niños Incapacitados at a cost of between 90,000 pesos and 100,000 pesos each month.
