Demand high at wheelchair library

The Ajijic Rotary Club, the Lake Chapala Shrine Club and Los Niños Incapacitados have joined up to create a “wheelchair library” to offer assistance to needy children and adults. Though still in its infancy, the library has been “discovered” by several people in the community who are making good use of it.

“Last year one of our members from Ontario obtained an adult wheelchair as a donation and brought it here to Chapala, where we knew someone who needed one,” said Perry King, president of the Lake Chapala Shrine Club, “Moonyeen (King’s wife) and I then decided to start a wheelchair library primarily for children in the area.”

Besides her work with Love in Action children’s shelter, Moonyeen King is also a Rotarian. She recently found out that the Guadalajara Rotary has access to free wheelchairs for children through the Wheelchair Foundation. The Ajijic Rotary Club was able to obtain five children’s wheelchairs for free and, in turn, donated them to the Shrine Club that treats crippled and burned children.

A second adult wheelchair and some children’s crutches have now been added.  Due to the demand for the children’s wheelchairs, the Ajijic Rotary Club is attempting to obtain some more chairs from the Wheelchair Foundation.

The Shrine Club is coordinating with Rich Petersen of Los Niños Incapacitados in locating children who need wheelchairs. If you know of children in need of a wheelchair, contact Perry King at (376) 763-5126.
