Help
Richard Slater, a resident of Casa de Ancianos in Chapala, needs your help. He fell and broke a hip a few days ago and needs surgery. Since it will be done in a clinic in Jocotepec the cost will be lower than if he were transferred to Guadalajara; but the cost will still be 35,000 pesos. His resources have dwindled due to his need for constant medication for his diabetes. If you can help out, contact Marlene Dunham at the Casa (765-2407) or her home (766-1067).
Genealogy
The next meeting of the Genealogy Forum is scheduled for November 30, 2 p.m. in the LCS Sala. Whether you have just acquired an interest in tracing your family history (kings, horse thieves and all) or you are an old hand at genealogical research, you are most welcome to attend.
This month everyone is asked to bring old photographs for the group to analyze. Often, one can’t identify the people in a photo but there may be many clues in the way they are dressed, their hair styles, things that are pictured around them and in the way that they are (or aren’t) posed.
In addition, there will be a presentation on researching cemetery and gravestone information on line, particularly working with the website www.FindAGrave.com.
For more information about the meeting or the group, contact Fran Murphy at 766-0067 or Phyl Gaskell at 766-2722.
Cruz Roja travel
Volunteers for the Cruz Roja Chapala Delegacion have scheduled three bus trips to Guadalajara that should help everyone prepare for holiday get-togethers and parties.
In December, the destinations are Tonala on December 3, Plaza Andares on December 10 and the Galarias Mall on December 15. For each of these trips, the deluxe motor coach leaves Auditorio de la Ribera del Lago promptly at 9 a.m. and returns from Guadalajara at 4 p.m. Tickets are 150 pesos per seat and are available now at the Cruz Roja table at the Lake Chapala Society, Monday through Saturday.
The craft fair
American Legion Ladies’ Auxiliary Unit 7 in Chapala opens its eighth annual Holiday Craft Fair on Sunday, December 6, 9 a.m. at Post Seven located at Morelos 114 in Chapala.
There is no admission fee to view the work of more than 50 vendors, who will be presenting all kinds of holiday inspiration. A Quiche Lorraine brunch with fruit cup and a glass of wine will be available for 60 pesos. A gourmet basket, a “kitty” basket, a “doggy” basket and a fantastic basket of goodies from SuperLake Market will be raffled off, and you can take your chance for fabulous prizes on the Lucky Wheel. Jeweler Daniel Jackson will be on hand to check out and clean your jewelry and the ladies will have a “Take ‘n Bake” sale. Also on hand will be a tarot card reader and a psychic. George Coleman will be signing copies of his latest book.
It’s a tradition. Be there.
Regalorama
St. Andrews Anglican Church’s annual Regalorama (huge garage sale) is only two weeks away on December 5. The gates will open at 10 a.m. and close at 3 p.m. You’ll find furniture items, clothing, household items, electronics, delicious home-made goodies and lots of other neat stuff.
The tea room will be open for scones, tea, coffee and finger sandwiches. There will also be chili dogs on sale and a raffle with many great prizes.
The address is Calle San Lucas in Riberas del Pilar. All proceeds go to local charities.
Learning seminars
The Lake Chapala Society (LCS) Learning Seminars, coordinated by Bob Miller and Fred Harland, begin their seventh year on Tuesday, December 1, noon in the LCS Sala. The weekly seminars are offered each Tuesday and feature distinguished guest speakers via podcasts on the Internet and shown on the big screen in the Sala.
Each session is introduced with background material on the subject and the speaker, followed by the video presentation (15 to 18 minutes long) and comments from one of the coordinators and an open discussion with and among the audience. Audience participation is encouraged and often results in stimulating and provocative discussions.
The guest speaker (via the Internet) on December 1 will be Professor Jared Diamond, author of the best-selling and Pulitzer Prize winning “Guns, Germs & Steel,” that looks at why European-based societies conquered the world, instead of the other way around. His latest best-selling book, “Collapse-Why Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed,” provides the focal point for the seminar’s pod cast.
All LCS members are invited to attend this opening session of this year’s seminars.
British Society
The next meeting of the British Society will be held on Saturday, December 5, 1 p.m. at Manix Restaurant, Ocampo 57 in Ajijic. The speaker will be Dr. Charlene Schultz, co-founder of the Lakeside Laughter Club. She will present an introduction to Laughter Yoga.
The meal for the meeting will feature crown roast pork with mashed potatoes, stuffing and veggies or bass wrapped in rosemary with tomatoes and green peppers for 110 pesos, including tip. Those looking for lighter fare can order a salad and dessert (pumpkin pie) for 75 pesos.
Be sure to contact Alicia McNiff at 765-4786 or Ceri Dando at cpdando2000@yahoo.com if you plan to attend.
Laughter
The Lakeside Laughter Club will meet on the beach behind Hotel La Nueva Posada every Wednesday, from 4-5:45 p.m. beginning on December 9. Laughter Yoga combines stretching and breathing exercises with playfulness, sound and laughter to promote physical, mental, emotional health and well-being. For more information call Dr. Charlene Schultz at 766-0884.
The directory
The 2010 English-language version of the Lakeside Directory is well advanced but publishers are aware that some of the information in the residential section of phone numbers is out of date. Since they are reliant on the general public for the correct information, the publishers are asking residents to contact them with any corrections or fresh information.
Phone Adelle Cordero between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. at (376) 762-0403 or go to the website (www.chapaladirectory.com) and click on “Contact Us” to send in correct information.
Niños de Chapala y Ajijic
Los Niños de Chapala y Ajijic now has a table set up in front of Salvador’s Restaurant every Wednesday where volunteers provide information about their scholarship program, sell hand-crafted items made by members and hold raffles for restaurant gift certificates. The first winner (the November 18 raffle) was Ken Gosh, who won a 300-peso certificate to Los Telares Restaurant. The winning ticket was drawn by Juan Daniel Garcia, one of the children in the NCA program.
The next raffle will be held on Wednesday, December 2. The initial goal is to raise sufficient funds to give gift vouchers to each of the kids in the program and their families on Three Kings Day (January 6).
Want to help? Stop at the table or contact NCA president Pat Percival at 766-4390.
