Laguna Chapalac - February 13, 2010

Memorial service

The memorial service for Tom Johnson, who passed away January 22, will be held Saturday, February 20, 2 p.m. at the Little Chapel by the Lake. All of Johnson’s many friends are invited.

On the boil

American Legion Post 7 in Chapala is throwing a Shrimp Boil on Saturday, March 6, 2 p.m. at the post located at Morelos 114 in Chapala. The event will feature all-you-can-eat large shrimp, corn on the cob, coleslaw, bread and dessert. The tickets, for 175 pesos, will include one national drink – beer or wine. It’s all about the ‘50s and ‘60s with a DJ playing music from that era. Dress for the times. Judging for the best costume begins at 3:30 p.m. For tickets call 765-3757 or 765-2259.

Democrat volunteers

Democrats Abroad—Chapala is looking for volunteers to help them out at the Ajijic Chili Cookoff on February 26, 27 and 28 to participate in the member and voter registration table. The Dems need at least two people at the table at all times. The more volunteers, the shorter the shift. The table will be up from about 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on each of the three days.

Democrats

Democrats Abroad, Lake Chapala Chapter, meets Monday, February 15, 4 p.m. at La Nueva Posada, Donato Guerra 9 in Ajijic. They will start the planning process for their Get out the Vote (GOTV) efforts this year.

If you can help, call (376) 766-0719 and leave a message with your name and phone number.

Red Cross travel

The Cruz Roja (Red Cross) volunteers’ bus schedule for March is now available. They will be leaving Auditorio de la Ribera del Lago in La Floresta at 9 a.m. (sharp) and returning at 4 p.m.

On March 3, the trip is to Plaza Galerias that features Costco, Sam’s, Walmart and Mega for 150 pesos. On March 9, the bus goes to Tlaquepaque for 150 pesos. On March 11, they take off for a terrific day at the Guadalajara Zoo. The cost of 250 pesos includes the zoo train, the safari park and the aquarium. On March 16 it’s a trip to Tonala for 150 pesos. Tickets are on sale at the Cruz Roja table at the Lake Chapala Society from Monday through Friday.

Friends

Friends of Richard Slater, who passed away January 3, are holding a fund-raising event Saturday, February 29. 2 p.m. at American Legion Post 7, Morelos 114 in Chapala. Slater unfortunately left behind bills for his cremation and for his medical treatment. Tickets for the event are 60 pesos each and include a BBQ meal, live entertainment with Bob Criss and raffles for some great prizes, including restaurant meals, shows and much more. Tickets will be available at Diane Pearl Colecciones at the corner of Ocampo and Colon. For more information, contact Erika Melnyk at 765-5537.

Condos

The next meeting of the Condominium Directors Group will be held Thursday, February 18, 10:30 a.m. at the recreation center of Condominium Villas de Tepalo.

Possible topics of discussion may include current pay rates for gardeners and guards, contracting out for gardeners and guards and legal means of fee collection. The meetings usually last about one hour.

To get to Villas del Tepalo, proceed uphill from Farmacia Guadalajara and Donas Donuts. After two blocks, fork slightly to the right at the Min Wah Restaurant. Keep going uphill, passing Condominium Lomas del Lago on your right. Villas del Tepalo is the next entrance on the right, opposite the school. It is easier to park on the street and walk in. The recreation center is above the arch just inside the entrance.

Contact John Keeling at 766-1801 for more information.

ACA stuff

Asociacion Comunitario Autosuficiencia (ACA) has several food-market tours scheduled for the next few weeks. The bus tours go to Guadalajara’s Abastos (wholesale) Market on February 20 and March 10; another goes to the fish market on March 19 and another, called “the organic tour,” is set for March 21. Tickets cost 200 pesos and are on sale at Diane Pearl Colecciones and on the patio at the Lake Chapala Society.

ACA’s “Food Extravaganza” from February 16 to March 18 on the Lake Chapala Society (LCS) veranda will feature informative speakers and gastronomical delights. If you want to know what’s cooking this week or next, check the LCS bulletin board for the full line-up schedule of chef speakers, dates and times. A 50-peso contribution covers everything you need for each class. A goal is to establish enough interest to start a Slow Food group here at Lakeside and to promote great local food. Sign up in the LCS office.

Learning

The next LCS Learning Seminar will be on Tuesday, February 16, noon in the Sala. The guest speaker (via Internet) will be Professor Rebecca Saxe discussing “How We Read Each Other’s Minds.” Fred Harland will be the moderator for the session.

While still a student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.), Saxe made a breakthrough discovery – that there is a specific region in our brains that becomes active when we contemplate the workings of other minds. She now runs “SaxeLab” at M.I.T. and is working on identifying what happens in our brains when we consider the motives, passions and beliefs of others. No crystal balls are involved.

All LCS members are cordially invited to show up and see and hear this provocative presentation and to express their opinions and comments in the discussion that will follow.

Home tour

The next Lakeside School for the Deaf “Behind the Walls” House Tour of five beautiful Lakeside homes is scheduled for Thursday, February 26. To make a reservation for this popular tour, contact Leslie Martin at 766-2274. The cost of the tour is a 150-peso donation per person. Transportation will be provided. Meet the tour at the Ajijic pier at the foot of Colon by 10:15 a.m. and the tour will depart at 10:30 a.m. The tour lasts about two hours.  Proceeds benefit the children from the Lakeside School for the Deaf.

Peace Corps

The Lakeside Returned Peace Corps Groups invites all those who have served in civic services (Peace Corps, Vista, CUSO, Katimvik, etc.) to a gathering and pot luck supper on February 20, 5 p.m. at 16 de Septiembre 34, Apt. 1A. Four guests from Peace Corps Mexico will speak on service in Mexico. Please call hosts Bob and Judith Terry at 766-0267 to confirm.
