Pastor Ray DeLange will continue his series about the Sermon on the Mount with “Let it Go,” on Sunday, February 21. Services begin at 10 a.m. at Lakeside Presbyterian Church, Carretera Chapala-Jocotepec 231A in Riberas del Pilar.
Learning
The next LCS Learning Seminar will be on Tuesday, February 23, noon in the Sala. The guest speaker (via an Internet podcast) will be author Barry Schwartz discussing “Our Loss of Wisdom.” Bob Miller will be the moderator of the session.
Schwartz makes a passionate call for practical wisdom (a.k.a. common sense) as an antidote to society gone mad with bureaucracy. He argues that rules often fail us, incentives can back-fire and practical, everyday wisdom will help us rebuild our world.
All LCS members are cordially invited to see and hear this provocative presentation and express their opinions and comments in the discussion that follows.
Unitarians
The service for February 21 at the Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship will be “The Ten Better Commandments.” The Fellowship meets Sundays, 10:30 a.m. at the Lake Chapala Jewish Congregation Center, Sta. Margarita 113 in Riberas del Pilar.

Navy League
The next meeting of the Lake Chapala Council of the Navy League is on Saturday, February 20, at Manix Restaurant, Ocampo 57 in Ajijic. The luncheon meeting will begin at 1 p.m.
The speaker for this session will be Raoul Schreiden, who will discuss his amazing experiences leading to his participation in World War II.
He was born in 1923 in what was then the Belgian Congo and was educated in Brussels but was an aviation buff from childhood. He met two American engineers who fortunately identified his deficiencies in math and science and encouraged him to attend technical school. He was not quite 18 when Belgium was invaded. He was wounded and confined to Brussels for a period. He escaped from Belgium trying to get to England and was imprisoned in Vichy France, where he escaped and worked with the Resistance. The story is fascinating and ends happily with his participation in the rebirth of Sabena Belgian Airlines.
The lunch meeting is open to everyone and prior military service is not required. Those who would like to attend should contact Council President Bill Neal at 766-3123, so proper planning may be accomplished.
Passion play
Volunteers are gearing up for the annual Mexican dinner to raise funds for Ajijic’s traditional Passion of Christ performance that will take place on Good Friday (this year on April 2).
The Mexican Dinner, served by those with roles in the play, is scheduled for Wednesday, March 10, 5 p.m. at Hotel La Nueva Posada, Donato Guerra 9 in Ajijic. The auction should be a lively one with paintings by many local well-known artists going on the block. Such artists as Javier Zaragoza, Enrique Velazquez, Judy Eager, Javier Ramos, Efren Gonzalez and will generously donate their work and all the proceeds to the Passion Play.
Tickets are 150 pesos and will include the dinner. A cash bar will be available. Tickets are available from Trudie Nelson at 766-1918 or trudieannenelson@yahoo.com, La Nueva Posada, Joan Uren at 766-2013 or mjuren@itrheat.com. Better yet, you can get tickets to sell from any of these sources.
The Passion Play relies on the expatriate community for support with the production costs. The funding gap is significant and the viability of the production is at stake.
Purim
The Lake Chapala Jewish Congregation will celebrate its annual Purim Festival Party on Sunday, February 28, 3 p.m. at the Congregation Center at Sta. Margarita 113 in Riberas del Pilar. They will be reading the Book of Esther, the Magillah and will make lots of grogger noise at the mention of Haman’s name. They will also be feasting on salmon and home made hamentaschen.
Those attending should take along their parve or dairy side dish to accompany the salmon and the hamentaschen. And, as is traditional, come in costume to really put yourself in the party mood.
Tickets are 70 pesos or 40 pesos for Congregation members. Please RSVP to holiday@lakechapalajews.com to ensure that there’s plenty of hamantaschen to go around.
Baptists
The Lake Chapala Baptist Church (corner of Sta. Margarita and San Lucas in Riberas del Pilar) is holding its annual bazaar on Saturday, March 6, beginning at 10 a.m. The proceeds will go into the church’s benevolent fund and is used for the medical needs of their Mexican congregation, emergency food for Mexicans in need, as well as milk for the boys at Hope House. It’s not too late to help by donating items. Call Judy Ball at 766-6886 or email judithball@prodigy.net.mx. Don’t miss the bake sale and jumbo hot dogs!
