Laguna Chapalac - March 6, 2010

Learning

The next Lake Chapala Society (LCS) Learning Seminar will be on Tuesday, March 9, noon in the Sala. The subject will be “Biomimicry in Action.” Bob Miller will be the moderator. The guest speaker (via an internet podcast) will be Janine Benyus, prolific author and lecturer and self-confessed nature nerd. The concept of mimicking nature’s actions has galvanized scientists, engineers, architects and designers into exploring how nature’s successes and inspire humanity while protecting the eco-system. For example: a self-cleaning leaf inspires a new kind of paint – one that enables rainwater to wash away dirt.

All LCS members are cordially invited to come see and hear this unusual premise and express their opinions and comments in the discussion that follows.

Red Cross travel

The Cruz Roja volunteers currently have space on two bus trips in March. The first is a trip to Tequila on Tuesday, March 23. The 750-peso ticket includes the transportation, lunch at a nice restaurant, a city tour, a visit to the Tequila museum and a distillery tour and tasting.

The other trip is to Plaza Galerias in Guadalajara on Thursday, March 25. The mall also includes Costco, Mega, Wal-Mart and Sam’s. The price is 150 pesos.

All trips depart from Auditorio de Ribera del Lago in La Floresta. The trip to Galerias leaves promptly at 9 a.m. and returns from Guadalajara at 4 p.m. The Tequila trip leaves at 8 a.m. and will return about 6:30 p.m.

Sign-up and further information can be obtained Monday through Friday at the Lake Chapala Society’s Cruz Roja table.

Fashions

Tickets are currently on sale for “Fashionista,” a tribute to the fashion capitals of the world set for Friday, March 19 at Hotel Real de Chapala in La Floresta. Cocktails and entertainment begin at 3 p.m., the buffet lunch at 4 p.m. and the fashion show at 5 p.m.

This show is always very popular and sells out fast. It’s the tenth such event to benefit Cruz Roja-Chapala. Ticket prices are 400 to 600 pesos, for platinum, reserved and unreserved seating. Further information is available Monday through Friday at the Cruz Roja table at the Lake Chapala Society.

Go fish

The Ajijic Fishing Club will meet Friday, March 12, 10:30 a.m. at the Dona Lola Restaurant in Ajijic. For more information, call Ross Mitchell at (387) 761-0926.

Anikan can

Originally from Guadalajara and now calling Lakeside home, the band Anikan delighted a sell-out crowd at Pedro’s Gourmet Restaurant on February 28. The music was hot and the food prepared by Pedro (Peter Palmer) – with “a little help from a friend” – was delicious.

The charity event, hosted without charge by Pedro and with Anikan playing for free, made a substantial contribution to the Niños de Chapala y Ajijic (NCA) educational program. The program provides much needed financial support to more than 200 Lakeside students, many of whom could not continue to attend school without financial assistance.

The NCA board of directors and the students extend a heartfelt thanks to Pedro and friends, to Anikan and especially to the many wonderful supporters.

You can learn more about NCA by visiting their project at Chacaltita 20A in Chapala (close to Soriana), at the Lake Chapala Society on Fridays, going to the website at www.lakesideninos.org or calling (376) 765-7032.

Scholarships

The next board meeting of Los Ninos de Chapala y Ajijic is scheduled for Tuesday, March 9, 10 a.m. at La Nueva Posada. All those interested in their scholarship program for local kids and the opportunities offered for volunteer work and/or sponsorship are invited to attend.

Unitarians

The theme of the service for the March 7 meeting of the Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship will be “Insights: Changing How You See So You Can Change What You Do.” The Fellowship meets Sundays, 10:30 a.m. at the Lake Chapala Jewish Congregation, Sta. Margarita 113 in Riberas del Pilar.

Presbyterians study

Ross Arnold begins a new Bible study at Lakeside Presbyterian Church on Friday, March 12. It will continue each Friday at 10 a.m. for 13 weeks. The study is a survey of the Bible from beginning to end, from Genesis to Revelation. Ross is a seminary-trained theologian and Bible teacher. This overview will give a survey of scriptures, how the Bible fits into history, its cultural context and the continuity between the Old and New Testaments. This class will serve as a basis for further Bible study.

Presbyterian sermon

On Sunday, March 7, Pastor Ray DeLange of the Lakeside Presbyterian Church will continue his series on the Sermon on the Mount from Matthew 6: 1-4. The title of the sermon is “Audience of One.” The service begins at 10 a.m. at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church, Carretera Chapala-Jocotepec 231A in Riberas del Pilar.

Erin

Everyone will be “wearin’ o’ the green” when the Ladies Auxiliary of American Legion Post 7 in Chapala throws its St. Patrick’s Day Bash on Wednesday, March 17, at Post 7 at Morelos 114 in Chapala.

Cocktails begin at 4 p.m. with a dinner of Irish stew, Emerald Isle Slaw, Celtic slab of garlic toast and Blarney iced brownies. Folks can watch “Lord of the Dance” during dinner, and afterwards do their own high stepping to music played by DJ Howard. There will be a 50/50 raffle and a raffle for a gourmet basket. After dinner Irish coffee will be offered for 35 pesos.

Tickets are 70 pesos in advance and 80 pesos the day of the event.

Better get your tickets early; they will most likely sell out!

Lone Star (that’s Texas, son)

The Lone Star Club invites everyone to join them at American Legion Post 7, Morelos 114 in Chapala, on the last Thursday of each month at 3 p.m. You don’t have to be from Texas. You just have to like Texas, been through Texas, shop in Texas or just think about Texas.

Take along snacks to share and be prepared to participate in a Texas Trivia Quiz and just have a great time.

Canadians

The Canadian Club has announced that it is honored to host Guillermo E. Rischcynski, Canadian ambassador to Mexico, at its event slated for Monday, March 15, 3 p.m. at Hotel La Nueva Posada, Donato Guerra 9 in Ajijic. (The date was changed from March 10 to accommodate the busy schedule of the ambassador.)

Rischynski has served Canada in numerous locations and positions around the world and speaks English, French, Spanish and Portuguese fluently. He is well acquainted with the Lakeside area. The ambassador, who was born in Canada but raised in Panama and the United States, was formerly vice president for the Americas at the Canadian International Development Agency in Canada as well as Deputy Director for Mexico, Latin American and the Caribbean. He also served as Canadian ambassador to both Colombia and Brazil and has been the ambassador to Mexico since September 2007.

Rischynski has an engaging and informal speaking style. Everyone is encouraged to attend. There is a 50-peso charge for non Canadian Club members.

Thanks

Organizers for “One Thousand and One Nights,” the benefit event scheduled for March 11 to benefit the Lakeside School for the Deaf and Children with Special Needs, wish to thank a number of businesses for their support. This year, snacks will be provided not only by committee members, but also by local restaurants, Chez Ninette, Four, Panino Deli and Roberto’s.

Throughout the evening, tickets will be drawn for three fabulous donated door prizes: two five-star hotel stays, one at the Windham Hotels Grand Bay Resort on Isla de Navidad and another at the Four Seasons Resort in Punta Mita. In addition, professional photographer Bruno Joachim of Ajijic has donated a family portrait. With no more than a purchase of a ticket to the gala, guests will have a chance to win one of these three generously donated gifts.

Tickets for the event are still available at 750 pesos per person. They may be obtained at Diane Pearl Colecciones at Colon and Ocampo in Ajijic, or contact Coco Wonchee at (045) 33-3106-0585 or Leslie Martin at 766-2274. Valet parking will be available at the gala’s venue of Villa Encantada in Chapala but guests are asked to car pool since parking space is limited.

Don’t miss this opportunity to join the crowd for cocktails, entertainment with two exotic belly dancers, elegant dining and dancing with music by Ricardo. Elaborate Moroccan-themed centerpieces will grace every table and be available for sale. Party-goers are encouraged (but not required) to wear something suggesting the Arabian theme.

Food extravaganza

ACA and LCS will continue with their classes dealing with food, its uses and preparation. Wednesday, March 9, noon to 2 p.m., Greg Couillard of Chili Bang Restaurant will present “Mexican Fusion Cuisine” and at 2:30 p.m., Care Gearhart will give a class on “Mexican Dining Etiquette 101.”

Wendee Hill will give a class on Cooking with Culinary Herbs on Wednesday, March 10, 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. and Chef Alex Sgroi will talk about Slow Food from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Wednesday, March 16, noon to 2 p.m., Jose Melendrez will explain Mexican Moles and on March 17, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. the class will be all about olive oil. March 18, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. study three regional veggies, all you’ll need for Mediterranean Food.

Please sign up and pay for the classes (50 pesos each) at the Lake Chapala Society or email acacentroecologico@gmail.com.
