Laguna Chapalac - July 10, 2010

NCA

The next meeting of Los Niños de Chapala y Ajijic is scheduled for Tuesday, July 13, 10 a.m. at La Nueva Posada. All of those folks interested in learning more about the NCA scholarship program and the need for volunteers and sponsors are invited to attend.

NCA continues to have a table in front of Salvador’s restaurant in Plaza Bugambilias every Wednesday (tianguis day). Stop by to see NCA’s unique gift items and check out Lady Mary Flemming’s wonderful children’s book, “Elizabeth Has an Adventure.” The price is 125 pesos, of which 25  pesos goes to the NCA scholarship program.

NCA provides tuition for about 200 local children whose families would probably not be able to keep them in school without the help. The grade range is from kindergarten through university studies. Kids are required to maintain a 8.0 average (out of 10).

The sponsor’s cost for kindergarten and elementary school is 85 dollars per year and many sponsors give another 120 dollars per child that is doled out at about 100 pesos per month to their families to help pay for food, cooking gas, new shoes and/or other incidentals as they arise.

Some local groups are sponsors, such as American Legion Post 7 in Chapala, that donates 500 pesos per month to the program.

To learn more about the program, attend the meeting on July 13 or call board member Pat Percival at (376) 766-4390.

NCA operates a thrift shop at Hidalgo 95B in Riberas del Pilar (at Calle San Mateo and the Carretera). It’s open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Volunteer website

Shelley Edson has created a new website, www.volunteerlakechapala.com. Edson feels that a lot of volunteer opportunities go unfilled because they don’t get the publicity they need. This website should provide descriptions of opportunities for those wanting to volunteer. Those looking for volunteers are welcome to use the site, too. It comes up easier and right on top when using Google as your browser. Not so much with others.

Presbyterians

Everyone is invited to attend Lakeside Presbyterian Church on Sunday, July 11. Pastor Ross Arnold’s sermon will be “Where is God When it Hurts?” His text is II Corinthians 4. Worship begins at 10 a.m. at Carretera Chapala-Jocotepec 231A in Riberas del Pilar.

Those who would like to get to know the new pastor should enjoy the open house at Ross Arnold and Carolyn Hansen’s (his wife) home from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The address is Ocampo 200 in Ajijic. For directions call (376) 766-1238.
