The American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Unit 7 in Chapala is preparing the Sixth Annual Mexican Fiesta to be held on Monday, September 13, with cocktails at 5 p.m. and dinner served at 6 p.m. The party (always a sell-out) will feature a menu of fresh Mexican salsa and chips, chicken fajitas, guacamole, refried beans, rice and flan. Live music for listening and dancing will be courtesy of Los Pios from Guadalajara. The Legion post at Morelos 114 in Chapala will be all decked out with linen tablecloths and napkins, china plates and decorations in honor of Mexico’s bicentennial Independence Day (September 16).
Besides the open bar, try tequila samples by Don Vito. Be ready for raffles for 50/50, a bottle of Crown Royal, a magnified lighted mirror or a limited edition serigraph with authenticity documents.

Tickets for 150 pesos each will be on sale at the Lake Chapala Society on Saturdays, La Bodega Restaurant, Salvador’s Restaurant on Wednesdays, August 25 and September 1, from 9 a.m. to noon, and American Legion Post 7. Purchase your tickets early as none will be sold at the door.
This is an “adults only” event. It is co-sponsored by La Bodega Restaurant.
LUnitarians
The sermon at the Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship on Sunday, July 25, will be entitled “Spiritual Heroes in Our Lives” and be given by Susan Barr. The service begins at 10:30 a.m. at the Jewish Congregation Center at Calle Santa Margarita 113 in Riberas del Pilar.
Presbyterians
Pastor Ross Arnold’s sermon at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church on Sunday, July 25, will be “Teach us to Pray” from Luke 11:1-13. Worship services begin at 10 a.m. at Carretera Chapala-Jocotepec 231A in Riberas del Pilar.
The new member class for all who want to join the church, as well as anyone interested in learning more about what Presbyterians believe will be held on Friday, July 23 and continues on July 30, 10 a.m. to noon. For those who can’t make the Friday dates, the classes will be repeated at 10 a.m. Saturdays July 24 and July 31.
New Anglicans
A new Anglican fellowship at Lakeside has been approved by Bishop Lino Rodriguez of the Western Diosece of the Anglican Church of Mexico. Known as Christ Church, the fellowship will meet on the first and third Sundays of each month, 10 a.m. upstairs at Manix Restaurant, Ocampo 57 in Ajijic. Summer fun
The Cruz Roja (Red Cross) Summer BBQ scheduled for Thursday, August 5, 3-6 p.m. at the Chapala Country Club (Vista del Lago) is going to go a long way to relieve summertime ennui for partiers. Chef Marco and his staff will prepare a lavish barbecue dinner and the music will be provided by Noe Raygoza. Four door prizes will be won and a huge sweet tooth’s heaven bake sale will be going on. You might win at golf putting or horse shoes, and, of course, this will be the venue at which the CRIVC cash raffle will be announced.
Tickets are just 250 pesos and are on sale now at the Cruz Roja table at the Lake Chapala Society or from any Cruz Roja volunteer. You’re not only going to have a terrific time, you’re going to have the satisfaction of keeping the essential services of the Chapala Red Cross operating for us all.

Not coming
Representatives from the United States Consulate in Guadalajara will not visit American Legion Post 7 or the Lake Chapala Society (LCS) in August. The schedule of visiting both venues on the first Wednesday of the month will resume in September. Meanwhile, the Consulate is located at Calle Progreso 175, Colonia Americana in Guadalajara. Cancelled
The Crime Prevention for Seniors Seminar scheduled at the Lake Chapala Society has been cancelled. Look for further announcements later in the summer.
Immigration
An explanation and clarification on the new Mexican Immigration procedures will be given on Friday, August 6, noon to 2 p.m. in the Lake Chapala Society Sala. The speaker on the subject is Alvaro Becerra from Becerra Immigration Services. Besides the lecture, there will be lots of time for questions and answers. There is no fee and everyone is welcome.
Hammers
The Have Hammers ... Will Travel carpentry class for Mexican youngsters aged 12 to 18, taught by local resident Richard Williams, is now affiliated with the Lake Chapala Society. Both boys and girls are welcome to participate. They will be taught basic carpentry skills as well as safety tips.
If you know interested youngsters, please call Williams at 766-1303 or email rgwms009@hotmail.com to sign them up. There will be one session in the morning for kids attending school in the afternoon and another in the afternoon for kids attending morning classes.
Also contact Williams to volunteer to help out for this class.
Spay and Neuter
Gudrun Jones, president of the Spay and Neuter Center, is calling a community meeting to be held Thursday, July 29, 4 p.m. in the Vista Alegre clubhouse at Libramiento 147, around the curve past the Pemex station on the mountain side of the highway heading toward Guadalajara. Everyone is welcome. According to Jones, the no-kill dog shelter has been a community project from the beginning and she’s interested in input about the project’s future.
Hope House
According to organizers, the fund-raising event for the Hope House home for boys held at the Lake Chapala Baptist Church on July 14 was a real success. Many donations for the silent auction were received from prominent local artists, restaurants, boutiques and individuals.
