Community thanks
Organizers of the recent yard sale to raise funds to help defray costs incurred for heart surgery for local veterinarian Pepe Magaña want to give a big THANK YOU to the Lakeside community and all the volunteers, donors and buyers who made the event such a success. Many of the shoppers didn’t ask for change from large bills used for small purchases and everyone expressed their appreciation and affection for Magaña. Many are indebted to him for his help with their animals in times of need and his tender-hearted care of pets that have lost their owners and their homes.
A special thanks to Lori and Vern Geiger of Lakeside Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation for showing up with the much-needed tent and table. Among the volunteers were Dottie and Shinji Matsumoto, Bridget Darby, Kat Carpenter and Libby Townsend.
The event raised 14,000 pesos. Those involved say that they were happy to have the opportunity to assist Magaña, as he never asks for help and spends all of his time and resources helping others.

Cruz Roja fun
A sell-out crowd of more than 270 people attended the Cruz Roja Summer BBQ on Thursday, August 5 at the Chapala Country Club. Seated on the patio and under large tents, the crowd savored the summer day with cream cheese brownies, chocolate turtle pies and cupcakes from the bake sale, washed down with frequent libations from the Country Club bar.
The buffet, a specialty of the Country Club and served every Friday evening, included chorizo, beef sirloin, grilled chicken, ribs, coleslaw, salads and au gratin potatoes.
The winners of the Red Cross Spring-Summer Raffle were announced with Steve Barr taking the prize of 15,000 pesos, Lori Skoda in second with 7,000 pesos and Linda Hendy going home with 3,000 pesos.
The event would not have been possible without the efforts of many Cruz Roja International volunteers. Donna Shannon, who chaired the event, and her crew produced a great day for everyone.
The event raised about 42,000 pesos, which is slightly less than half of the amount the International Volunteers groups must raise each and every month to keep essential Cruz Roja services operating.
Cruz Roja Mexicana Delgacion Chapala provides essential medical services to the entire Chapala area community. Emergency services are operated 24 hours a day, seven days a week. More than 140,000 people living and visiting the north and south shores of Lake Chapala and numerous small villages surrounding the Lake are served. It is entirely supported by donations and in-kind services. To make a donation or to volunteer, please visit the web site: www.cruzrojachapala.com.
ACA friends
The recent Asociacion Comunitario Autosuficiencia (ACA) fund-raising and volunteer drive was a great success. The meeting began with a brief history of the wonderful things co-founders Marie Pruden and Wendee Hill have accomplished over the 14 years the farm has been in operation. Guests listened to a presentation that described the current situation and plans to capitalize on the considerable market opportunities for organically-grown products and move ACA to a financially profitable business model. A group of volunteers called “Friends of ACA” have started the important steps to reach this goal and the farm has already doubled the number of planted rows.
Of the 39,000 pesos raised, 10,000 pesos came from memberships and donations. The most successful effort was the Adopt-A-Row program that raised 29,000 pesos. That program allows individuals to pay 1,000 pesos to directly fund a row of crops. These funds are specifically dedicated to planting the seeds that will eventually “grow” the business into a profitable operation. Adopt-A-Row contributors get their names printed on a plaque that is staked at the end of their specific row.
A volunteer orientation meeting was held at the farm on Wednesday. Anyone interested in participating in Adopt-A-Row can still do so by contacting Greg Ochs at 766-5519 or gregochs@gmail.com. Twenty-nine rows have been funded so far and the overall goal is 60 rows.
Friends of ACA are hopeful the organization will fully recover from its current crisis and become a thriving “green” business in the future.
