Do consider putting your name and blood type on the current update of the Lakeside Blood Donor’s list. The laws for donating blood in Mexico are that the donor must be between 18 and 65 years old, weigh at least 50 kilos (110 lbs.), never have had hepatitis or dengue or other blood diseases, not have had dental work in the past three months, not be on any medication, not have consumed alcohol within the past 24 hours and know your blood type.

Women voters
Democrats Abroad hosted a very successful and well-attended dinner party at Hotel Real de Chapala in Ajijic on August 21. The event celebrated the 90th anniversary of the 10th Amendment to the United States Constitution, guaranteeing women the right to vote.
Featured were the PBS special “One Woman, One Vote” and a live performance by six local women representing six of the leading activists who participated in this 70-year struggle for equality.
Among the guests were Jackie Peterson, an organizer of the new Mazatlan Chapter of Democrats Abroad and R. Paul Brier, who produced the authentic music of the era for the PBS special narrated by actress Susan Sarandon. Brier now lives in Ajijic.
As requested by many of the guests, there will be a second chance to see the DVD. It will be shown in the new series of “Movie Nights,” this one at the home of Kem Spaulding, Galeana 22A in Ajijic, Wednesday, September 22, 6 p.m. Mark your calendars now

University Assistance
The University/Vocational Assistance (UVA) program presented 33 students who receive scholarship assistance at the home of Lynn and Dean Hanson on August 22. Nine new students joined the 24 already in the program. The UVA program has been in existence for more than 35 years and has made it possible for numerous needy local students to complete their educations. A unique feature of the scholarship program is the commitment to sponsors that every peso or dollar donated goes to students. With the difficult economic times hitting local families, there were more applications received this summer than in times past.
Those interested in assisting a student or who would like more information about this important program, please contact Sue Torres at (376) 766-2932 or Lynn Hanson at 766-2660.
