Laguna Chapalac - September 4, 2010

Dance at the ‘Tec’

Instituto Tecnologico Superior celebrates ten years of service to the community with a dinner dance on Friday, September 10, 7 p.m. at the school. The proceeds of this event will provide scholarships to students who are earning degrees in engineering and business administration. The engineering students will have good jobs waiting for them at the new software park located next to the school.

The fun event, including dinner (lasagna), dancing and entertainment costs 200 pesos. Contact Robert Kleffel at (376) 766-1552 or stop at Actinver-Lloyd in Ajijic.

The yard sale

St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Riberas del Pilar is already working hard, preparing for the annual Regalorama on the first Saturday in December. As always, they are looking for donations for this gigantic bazaar. Search your cupboards for gently used clothing. Household items, electronics and white elephants (even pink ones) are most welcome.

Items can be delivered to the church in Riberas del Pilar any weekday morning from 9 a.m. to noon or call the church at (376) 765-3926 if pick up is required. Look for a mammoth two-day drop off in the Walmart parking lot in October. Watch this column for dates.

All proceeds from the Regalorama are distributed to deserving Lakeside charities.

Golf tourney

The Cruz Roja (Red Cross) Golf Tournament is scheduled for Thursday, October 21, at the Chapala Country Club. The shotgun start begins at 9 a.m. Entry for golfers is 1,200 pesos per person and includes the golf cart, a golf shirt, an on-course lunch and an end-of-the-day barbecue. Prizes will be awarded for the first-, second- and third-placed foursomes, plus men’s and women’s longest drive and closest to the pin.

Those who are not golfers can join the fun at 4 p.m. by attending the barbecue. Tickets for the barbecue are 250 pesos each. Non-golfers can come early and visit the local service vendors at the mini trade fair.

Hole sponsors for the event include L&R Water Gardens, Solar Technology and Chapala Tree Service. Tournament sponsors are Hole-in-One Restaurant and Siete Lenguas Tequila.

Tickets for golf and barbecue can be purchased at the Cruz Roja table at the Lake Chapala Society or at the Country Club de Chapala pro shop. Bring your pesos and, if you are a golfer, your shirt size.

Go green

The Lake Chapala Green Group is starting its fall line-up of meetings the first Tuesday of September (September 7) at 3 p.m. at the Lake Chapala Society. Jason Sherburn will be the guest speaker. His topic will focus on 350.org, an international organization dedicated to awareness of the effect of atmospheric pollution on global warming. The organization is a central clearing house for projects concerned with tackling carbon reduction and the need to build sustainable communities.

Sherburn is proposing an aquaponics (fish farming) project as his contribution to the overall global crisis. This is a timely topic, given the difficult time local fisherman are having. Sherburn’s plans, when implemented, will present a real opportunity for improving the quality of life for fishing families and others residing near Lake Chapala.

A lot has been happening in the sustainable community movement here over the summer and Lakesiders are urged to attend the meeting to catch up and to share their own green buzz.

For the kids

Los Niños de Chapala y Ajijic (NCA) is inviting all of those interested in its scholarship program to stop by their table in front of Salvador’s Restaurant  Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to noon. The program makes school possible for about 200 local children.

Besides selling interesting craft items, NCA is distributing its new bilingual brochures and promoting the wonderful bi-lingual children’s book, “Elizabeth Has an Adventure,” written and illustrated by Lakeside’s Lady Mary Flemming. For further information about Los Niños de Chapala y Ajijic contact Pat Percival at 766-4390 or the Chapala NCA office at 765-7032.

Los Niños meeting

Los Ninos de Chapala y Ajijic will not be holding its scheduled board meeting on September 14, as many board members are still on their summer hiatus. The NCA office facilities (every day in Chapala and Friday mornings at LCS) are operating normally in support of their students and families. NCA is always prepared and ready to welcome sponsors and other visitors at the Chapala facility, about 100 meters northeast of the Soriana parking lot. Call 765-7032 for directions.

Canadians

Join the Canadian Club of Lake Chapala to initiate another Lakeside “season” on Wednesday, September 8, 3-5 p.m. at Hotel La Nueva Posada. The focus of the event will be the celebration of Mexico’s 200th anniversary of Independence and the 100th anniversary of the Revolution. Drink a toast to Independence, enjoy some great recorded Mexican music and have fun with Mexican Bingo. Everyone is welcome.

There is a 50-peso charge for non-members. La Nueva Posada is located at Donato Guerra 9 in Ajijic.

Bus trips

The first Cruz Roja bus trip for September is headed for Guadalajara’s Plaza Galerias on Thursday, September 9. The bus leaves from outside the Auditorio de la Ribera del Lago at 9 a.m. (sharp) and returns at 4 p.m. The price is 150 pesos for the round trip. Tuesday, September 21, will see a trip to the plush Andares mall in Zapopan. The bus leaves at 9:30 a.m. and returns at 3:30 p.m. The price is 150 pesos per person. Tickets can be purchased at the Red Cross table at the Lake Chapala Society.

Round-up for Red Cross

The International Cruz Roja Volunteers and the Damas have been working with Soriana to make the Chapala Delegation of the Red Cross the recipient for the “redondeo” (rounding up) campaign for September and October. Redondeo means that your change from purchases is rounded up to the next peso and the difference goes to a charity. This is the time for Lakesiders to shop at Soriana and help the Red Cross. If the clerks don’t ask you if you want to participate (some are shy about talking to foreigners), just say “redondeo” pronounced ray-don-day-oh.

For the dogs

If your dog is afraid of thunderstorms or fireworks, check out the Lakeside Friends of the Animals website at www.lakesideanimalfriends.org for information about helping them.

Presbyterians

The Lakeside Presbyterian Church will be inducting its first group of 28 new members on Sunday, September 5 at 10 a.m. In honor of the event, Pastor Ross Arnold’s sermon will be “Membership Has Its Privileges,” using Corinthians 12:1-27 as his text. The church is located at Carretera Chapala-Jocotepec 231A in Riberas del Pilar.

Anglicans

Christ Church Anglican Fellowship will meet Sunday, September 5, 10 a.m. at Manix Restaurant, Ocampo 57 in Ajijic, to celebrate the Holy Eucharist. Pastor Danny Borkowski has chosen the topic “Who Can Be a Disciple of Jesus?” for his sermon. It is based on Luke 14:25-33.

Unitarians

The sermon at the meeting of the Lake Chapala Universalist Unitarian Fellowship on Sunday, September 5 will be “Immigration,” by Trudy Crippen. The service will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Jewish Congregation Center located at Santa Margarita 113 in Riberas del Pilar. There will also be a “new membership ceremony” for those joining the fellowship.

A note of thanks

Mary Alice Sargent writes: “I would like to express my appreciation and gratitude for all of the expressions of condolence I have received in the three weeks since the death of my beloved husband, Erick Sargent. The cards, emails, e-cards, telephone messages, and personal greetings have all held their own comfort. I would also like to add my public thanks to the four people—Carmen, Carolyn, Lori, and Luke—who dropped everything to rush to Guadalajara to donate blood for his surgery, and the Red Cross for their prompt response to my call, and to the people that have made contributions to the memorial fund in Rick’s name.”
