La Manzanilla Memo- April 30, 2011

Safe & Sane Semana Santa It was, by all accounts, a successful Semana Santa in La Manzanilla.  The weather was perfect and the bay calm.
The beach was packed – almost to maximum capacity on Holy Thursday and Good Friday – and crowds gave retailers, restaurant and rental owners, and campgrounds one last financial boost before summer. I neither saw nor heard of mishap or mayhem during the week, which I take to mean everyone stayed mellow.

I’m a big fan of Semana Santa.  Not for any religious or cultural reasons.  I’m in it for the churros.  The “churro lady” from Guadalajara, or this year her daughter, only comes to La Manzanilla during Holy Week.  Churros, if you’re unfamiliar with these decadent delights, are coils of deep-fried dough, cut into strips and rolled in cinnamon and sugar.  It’s taken me almost a dozen years to figure out that one bag of 10 six-inch churros equals five feet of frizzled bliss.  Well, it’s only once a year.
