Milestone
Last week’s turtle hatchling release in Nuevo Vallarta may have looked like many others that have taken place there over the last several years, but this one – organized by the Association for Environmental Unity in Mexico (AMA) – was very different and marked a welcome milestone.

The release took place on the beach in front of the Bahia del Sol Condominiums, where the AMA turtle conservation camp in Nuevo Vallarta is located.
“In the world of turtles, this is a big event because the Leatherbacks have been disappearing rapidly on the Pacific coast of Mexico,” said Carlos. “In the last 20 years, we have lost 95 percent of their nesting population.”
AMA Mexico is a non-profit organization “devoted to the protection of the natural resources and ecology of Mexico’s Pacific coast,” says its brochure.

Drunk driving
After noticing the increased number of traffic accidents involving drunk drivers reported in local newspapers, Amigos de Bucerias Treasurer Dick Pickup did some investigation and learned that the municipality’s two alcohol breathalyzers had been out of service for quite a while.
After additional research, he discovered that breathalyzers are not as expensive as he first thought. For about 1,000 dollars, five testers and 500 disposable mouthpieces could be supplied to the local traffic police.
Pickup arranged a meeting with Transito officials on January 6, to get their take on the idea of Amigos funding the new equipment. He has subsequently received written answers to his questions on the use, maintenance and storage of the equipment, and says he is pleased with the responses.

Pickup says if Amigos allows him to continue his project, he will ask other community service groups in Bahia de Banderas to share the cost.
Recycling changes
Barry Munro has announced that the Recyclers of Bucerias are now taking clear glass bottles, newspaper and cardboard. Please do not use the recycling baskets on the streets for your glass! Drop- offs of glass can be made at any time at the Bucerias Recycling Center, located at the corner of Invierno and Encino. This is very important. Please help the recycling program grow!
If you are interested in volunteering with the Recyclers, stop by the center on any Thursday morning or call Barry at 298-2809.
Fund-raising
Manos de Amor recently held a successful cocktail party raising over 20,000 pesos. It was held at the beautiful Condominiums Los Alebrijes and featured lots of wonderful food, good wine and excellent music by Richard Gordon and Doug DeMeerleer. Many thanks to all of those who helped to make this event such a success.
Manos de Amor is now gearing up for their always popular Rhythm ‘n Ribs, (number 5), which will be held on February 21 in the Bucerias plaza.
More fund-raising
The Bucerias Bilingual Community Center is pleased to report that this week’s bazaar brought in over 5,000 pesos. Director Judi Conrad sends special thanks to the volunteers who organized and staffed the bazaar. Foremost among these were Dorothy Simpson and Anne Milling, who headed up the sale. Many more volunteers helped gather donations, pass out flyers promoting the sale, and staffed the cashier stand.
Those items which did not sell during the three-hour sale were donated to Manos de Amor and the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. Veronica and friends of Manos have already added them to their cache of sale items for the next Manos de Amor sale in the Tianguis.
Book sale
Rita Kollock wishes to convey a quick thank you for the great turnout at the book sale held last Thursday.
“The library now has 10,560 more pesos to add to its treasury due to book sales,” said Kollock. “The calendar sales have also been very successful this year – 250 sold so far and I will be receiving 20 more tomorrow, most of which have already been sold. This will be the last shipment of calendars to us – so if you haven’t already purchased your 2009 calendar, please give me a call asap at 298-1263.”
