New road to El Valle
Construction of a shorter, faster, smoother route to the center of the municipal government operations has been completed.
The paving, bridge-building and some realignment of the six-mile stretch of gravel road from Bucerias to Valle de Banderas (“El Valle”) began over two years ago. The road improvements were completed in three phases, funded by money from the State of Nayarit.
New asphalt pavement with new bridges, some curbs and guard rails replaces the former dusty, rough gravel surface which had made the road to El Valle less preferable than the heavily-traveled paved road heading eastbound from Highway 200 at Mezcales.
“It is finally finished and it is so much nicer than having to drive to Mezcales and through all the little towns to get there,” says Bucerias resident Karen Knapp, who goes to El Valle often to visit friends there.
She warns that travelers should avoid driving the road after dark, “because there is no striping on the road yet and it would be dangerous at night, with the canal on one side.”
It is not yet known when the newly-paved section will be connected to the end of the cobblestone street, Calle Estaciones, a distance of a couple hundred yards which is still gravel.
Fundraising
On February 1, the Bucerias Bilingual Community Center (BBCC) celebrated two years of service. The BBCC offers English instruction to Mexican residents and Spanish instruction and various activity classes to a growing number of part- and full-time foreign residents. The Center promises to keep classes small and fees affordable.
Most of the 24 people who taught classes this past year were volunteers. Money to support the center comes from class fees, various fundraisers and contributions.
Judi Conrad, who retired to Bucerias with a dream and bought and remodeled the building, also continues to pay for countless things that help to keep the center running.
Conrad pointed to some BBCC successes of the last year. “Over 700 students participated in BBCC progams in 2008. 400 Mexican students have participated in English classes and the summer program for children and almost 300 foreigners have enrolled in the Spanish, yoga, and computer classes.”
Many who have taken classes or volunteer at the center feel that it is time to thank Conrad by pledging their annual support.
So, rather than buying tickets for an event, please consider making a gift to the BBCC to help reach the 2009 goal of 10,000 dollars (approximately half of the annual budget).
Conrad thanks everyone who has supported the BBCC in the past.
“I appreciate the contributions that have been made, and know that a number of people plan to send a check when they return home to the US or Canada.”
There are several ways to contribute. Just stop by the BBCC at Calle 16 de Septiembre #48 or visit the webpage at www.buceriasbilingualcommunitycenter.org and click on the “donations” tab. Donations can be tax-deductible in the US and can be paid by personal check or PayPal.
Jewelry
The Bucerias Art Walk Plaza is proud to announce a champagne reception for jeweler Rachel Knipping.
Visiting from California, Knipping is a premier jeweler whose creations feature the unexpected juxtaposition of natural stone with the sparkle of Swarovski Crystal or a smooth ribbon of silk.
“Why wear a piece of trendy jewelry that 50,000 other people have when you can wear something fabulous and totally unique to you?” Knipping says.
The champagne reception will be Friday, April 10, 7 p.m.to 9 p.m. (Jalisco) at the Bucerias Art Walk Plaza.
Knipping will also be holding jewelry-crafting classes, offering the chance to learn how to turn your vacation souvenirs into a long lasting memory by creating a pendant with your collected beach glass.
These four-hour workshops will be held Saturday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, April 11, 13, 14 and 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (Jalisco) and cost 500 pesos each.
If you would like to see a photo of the finished workshop piece or register for a class contact Christy at thebuceriasartwalk@gmail.com.
