We’re back to write about the activities, events and “light news” taking place along the shores of Bahia de Banderas, which is also the name of the municipality just north of Puerto Vallarta.
Our focus is on Bucerias, the largest of the “suburban” tourist towns, because that’s where we reside. If you know of an event or activity that would be of interest to our readership, let us know about it.
Youthful halloween bakers
Bucerias’ popular Pie In The Sky bakery altered its routine for a day to give the children of the Manos de Amor shelter a real Halloween/Day of the Dead treat.
It was a “Day In The Life of a Pastelero” for the 12 young cupcake decorators, who arrived to start their “training” a little after 9 a.m. to be greeted by bakery owner Susan Drexler and her husband Phil.
Also on hand were shelter director Veronica Gomez, two assistants, five helper/interns from Norway, as well as bakery staff members Manuela Garza, Zulem Angel Mendoza, Carmina Izazaga Herrera and Maria de Lourdes Ayala.
First on the agenda was a tour of the bakery, to learn the production system, from where the cakes begin as mixes, before moving on to different work areas to become the finished product.
Next, the kids’ decorating experience began with hand-washing and an explanation of why proper cleanliness is so important.
After putting on their uniforms, the children formed three groups to choose from three cupcake designs to use as models for their own creations. Each group was shown how to recreate the example on a cake base provided for practice.
Finally, with help from their teachers, each child produced his or her own Halloween cupcake, suitable for eating right away or save for eating later.
Around noon, after lots of “thank yous” and photo opportunities, the children headed back to the shelter in time for afternoon school classes.
Said Drexler: “This won’t be their last visit. We intend to do more with the shelter. The kids were so appreciative of what little we were able to do to make their life a little happier during Halloween week.”
Drexler said they want to provide something special for each child’s birthday in a bid to “sweeten what must be some difficult days.”
