A new weekly vendor market has begun in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle on Sundays, in the plaza from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Lori Wilson, a volunteer from the La Cruz community service group APERCH, says the focus is on natural foods and local crafts. “That includes baked goods, organically grown fruits and veggies, salsas, spreads, jewelry, women’s bags, clothing, shoes, sketches and paintings … all the usual.”
That’s not quite all. There’s also a children’s storytelling area and volunteer helpers involve kids in using old toys, boxes and other discarded items to create imaginative playthings.
Vendors come from the local area but also include those from the Puerto Vallarta and the La Peñita markets.
Jason Foster organized the market through Coopertiva Huanacaxtle, operating under the umbrella of APERCH.
Foster says the goals of the market are twofold: achieve a stronger connection between producers and consumers and generate money for local projects, including plaza improvements, operate a mobile library van and build a recreation center.
The market vendors give a share of their profits to turn the projects Foster envisions into reality.
“November 28 was our second event,” says Wilson. “There have been good turnouts for both, with more each week as word spreads. We’ve seen Spanish- and English-speaking shoppers.”
Foster said vendor stalls have increased from 18 at the first market day and the number of customers has almost doubled.
