Art & culture program
Local non-profit organization PEACE is offering Bahia de Banderas area youths the opportunity to learn about the arts through a daily after-school program, which kicked off January 31.
Each day, between 150 and 195 students from six area schools participate in the program, which includes theater, sports, art, ecology and homework clubs.
“These children often come from specific rural educational backgrounds with particular learning needs, cultural backgrounds and low literacy levels,” said Nikhol Esteras Roberts, director of Casa Comunidad, PEACE’s education program.
The schools are located in four localities: Emiliano Zapata, Corral del Risco, Higuera Blanca and Bucerias.
According to local government sources, just over half the residents in these towns were born in a different municipality or state and often migrated here to find work in the construction and service industries.
The program is free to the students but PEACE is hoping to find individuals and families who would generously sponsor one or more children to benefit from this program. One child can attend the PEACE After School Program every day for a month for 179 pesos or 15 dollars.
PEACE believes that after school programs increase academic achievement, positive work habits and motivation in students.
“Our amazing teachers inspire their students and encourage them to be active players in both their individual and collective learning processes,” says Esteras Roberts. “We see amazing transformations and moments of discovery every single day.”
